I've used PPG single stage urethanes on several XR4ti's - stock with German enamel of some sort. From observation of the stock parts - the paint on the flex parts stays on very well from the factory - DITTO for 928's!, and the recommendation of others - I've always left as much of the factory finish on as possible. Keep in mind these cars have acres of flex plastic on them - cladding halfway up the side and substantial bumpers. The parts must be flexed dramatically to install, esp. the rocker mlds. I used the PPG flex agent in primers and color. The cars have been subject to great abuse - parked outside, teenage driven, salt, snow, owned for years - no problems. These are solid, non-metallic colors with no clear - just like older 928's in solids. I'm a nut about degreasing, used plastic cleaner but no adhesion promotor. Some of the surface was bare urethane after repair with 'Lord Fusor' products and normal 2-part flex glaze for tiny imperfections. The Ford enamel seems much softer than the original paint on my 2 Porsches. The P-cars are in good shape and haven't been under my gun yet. I strongly suspect the urethane is the same as the Merkur stuff based on the fact Karman made the car and the era and the way it looks as far as wavyness and such. Everyone says strip the bumpers but I'm not going to when I do the 928. The paint is on there great and I know the PPG will stick to near anything as a look at my shop floor and anything the stuff touched will demonstrate. It does seem to need a 3M 600 grit for good stick as a minimum - you must do your edges well.

well, it's finally ready go to the paint shop...almost, with two minor things to do..

only things left to do is pull off the door handles, and mount two junk tires on the wheels Matt shipped to me (Thanks again, Matt. I really do appreciate the wheels)

I had thought about removing the headliner, but it's is a real pain to do so with a sunroof, so it will stay. removing the sunroof was bad enough. the bumper supports were very easy to remove, and will be cleaned up before re-installation.

the headlight adjusters also came out today, as they are non-working. did some more touch up grinding on both ends of the car to finish up areas near the bumper covers, and it's pretty much ready for the body restoration to begin......

more next month when I anticipate purchase of Ott Nizzazz fenders and their installation.

I am very excited for you Russ. I have always liked your car, and what you have done with it.

I appreciate the flowers.

6 months of priming, sanding, priming, sanding, letting the primer breathe, and more priming, sanding, and letting the primer breathe some more is going to be hard to watch.......I'm going to try my best to stay away from all of that while it takes place. Nothing worse than watching paint dry.

But, the rest of the interior parts are at the upholstery shop, so at least I have something else to look forward to.

thanks--
