Default Good Restaurant in LA?

Here's the 928 content. I get to show off my car (which will hopefully not be whirring) to a long time friend of mine who's flying in from Germany today. She's here for only a couple of days, and I am busy tomorrow, so this evening is the only opportunity.

We'll be hanging around the LAX area, El Segundo and Torrance. I'm thinking it would be good to go to Manhattan Beach or Redondo. Any suggestions?

I like the place with the chiliburgers on the edge of downtown.

I've already taken her to Tommy's for the cultural experience. She wasn't impressed

I love Tommy's. We used to make Tommy's runs from here when I was in college. We'd accumulate a book of orders and send a couple of guys down, they'd load up and bring them back. Didn't really matter that they were cold by the time they got back up here.

What about the Rusty Pelican in Newport Beach? Haven't been in a few years but used to really enjoy it.

My across-the-street neighbor appreciates your love of Tommy Burgers. One of Tommy's daughters.

I'm not a fan of city dining, especially when entertaining an out-of-town guest. All cities have restaurants, and inside they pretty much look thge same and serve the same food. I happen to like Gladstones for Fish on Coast Highway north of Santa Monica. There are likely some nicer places but the atmosphere and food match up with my budget and tastes pretty well. Call ahead for reservations, and be aware that they are valet parkers. You can usually negotiate with the parkers to do it yourself, so long as they get the fee. Place is a little north of casual dining, can get noisy depending on when you are there.

From the airport you can endure the freeway ride, 405 north to west on 10 to the ocean. Follow it north a few miles to Gladstones on the left. There are more creative routes along the ocean from the airport, through MDR and Santa Monica and on towards Malibu. Nice after-dinner drive north a little along the coast. Lots of places in MDR right in the marina area too.

There may be one or two more intimate places along the coast at the Malibu Colony entrance. Chance a star sighting there if that's your thing. Some interesting places along the highway outside and past the colony. Almost all are good to great food, just need to find the right spot to fit your needs and budget.

Sorry I don't know any of the Torrance/Redondo/Manhattan Beach places anymore.

If you are near LAX, there is a good restaurant in Marina Del Rey called "The Warehouse".

There is also a really good sushi place near there:

If you're headed to Newport, check out Ruby's on Balboa pier. Great burgers and shakes, and you just can't beat the location. And for a great steak, Smitty's in Pasadena is fantastic.

Dude - please keep the OT stuff outta here.

I get that you don't want to buy a Membership which gives you access to the OT forum, but that does not give you the right to post non-928 content in this tech forum.

Closed.
