Hood Adjustment

In detailing my newly purchased '91 S4 I notice that the hood is slightly out of adjustment; the driver's side rear corner and passenger side front corner seem to be high; "proud" for you purists. It has a clean carfax. How do I go about adjsuting the hood so it is perfect? BTW, this is my car, 'purchased last month...I like. http://www.928registry.org/1991-928S4-0381.htm

I've found it impossible to get mine correct. Going to try a new hinge since my drivers side is doing the "cowl induction" thing. It's 1/2 inch+ higher than the fender.

First thing to do is to lube up the hinges, to make sure they aren't just sticky. If that fails, you can loosen the high side and slightly adjust the side. Also make sure the rubber bumpers aren't causing it to sit high.

This is one of those things where once you have done it you can do it again - you can also show someone how to do it.... you cannot however easily describe in words how to do it...
It is frustrating and awkward the first time whatever you do

I second what Andrew said about lube on the hinge pivot points. Poor lubrication will cause that side to sit high. I've seen it with my car and others.
The hinges are adjustable for height on the hood side, but it is not intuitive which way to move the hinges. I set the upper hinge bolts just slightly loose so they can be moved but will hold a position then try to get the hood where I want it, then open it and tighten the hinge. Of course, make sure the lower bolts that hold the hinge to the body are tight, but there is no adjustment there.
I have failed to get hoods to adjust properly when the hinge pivots, which are just large rivets, are worn or loose. New hinges are needed in that case.

I found it pretty easy.......I've removed or adjusted several different 928's with good success.....1st clean and lube the way complicated hinges.........then remove the latch assemby at the front of the hood (its a bitch to keep popping the hood everytime).....then loosen the 2 bolts per side that hold the hood.....the hood can be ajusted for height in the rear with the bolts alone with fore-aft....if the height is too low in front you need to adjust the little rubber bumpers that scew in or out......Side to side "gap" adjustment is done with shims between the hood and the hinges...for some reason they are never even...typically a bunch on 1 side and none on the other...but the hood lines up so who cares....
I've found it easiest to set the panel gap 1st with the shims....then set the fore-aft by squaring the hood against the fender near the windshield.....this tends to work well...........
By far the most important aspect is ITS A TWO MAN JOB.....once the hood is where you want it...the other person holds it in place while you tighten the bolts.....its almost impossible to get right alone!!
Once you get it where you want and the bolts are tight.....open and close it a few times...then put the front latch back on (theres adjustment there too)
