Post Crossover BWAAAAA

I got the Ott Crossover on last nite. (Before bolting up the rest of the exhaust, I just HAD to start it up! WOW - What a BEE-YOU-TEE-FULL sound!!...neighborhood dogs barked for 30 minutes afterwards!)

Because my car is a EURO, the cats were welded on when Federalized, so I am having to 'fabricate/rig' a way to connect the tail of the x-over to the remainder of the exhaust. I have tried using a couple of 'pep boys' sizing adapters and a 6" length of bendable pipe connected with exhaust u-clamps...but I am still getting a lot of leaks from all the joints (but - o boy - what a GREAT sound!).

When I initially tried to find a muffler shop to install the x-over - I was told not only "NO", but "@#%$ NO!" They would not touch the cats - even for a "temporary" installation of my "test pipe"...so I guess I have 2 questions...
1-Any ideas on sealing the leaks...
or - PREFERABLY
2 - Now that the cats are already off - is it 'illegal' for a muffler shop to 'finish' the job for me? (i.e. - install connectors from the end of the OTT to the rest of the exhaust system?)

Now that the cats are off, find yourself a high performance muffler shop and they should be able to weld your stuff together.

I agree, just find a different shop. The P-car specific shops remove cats all of the time for track use. They have you sign a waiver that covers their butt and off they come. It shouldn't be a big deal.

Cool

Mark-

[You know, I thought I heard a really-cool sounding car yesterday~]

A few years ago I bought a Nissan Maxima airport car ["Betty the Brown Beater"] that ran beautifully but that would wake up all of Seminole County when it started up.

[Funny thing: I live in Orange County~ ]

Unbeknownst to me at the time of purchase, the cat had been removed, most likely by the PO. I found this out when I took it to a chain muffler shop-and they promptly ran me out of there. I called a few places, and finally found a smaller place that would at least look at the car...but even they said that they would get clobbered by the State of Florida if they did any other work on the car other than re-installing an original equipment cat or aftermarket equivalent. I never did fix the muffler. I just bought more ear plugs.

Good luck-

Normy!

That's what I finding, Normy...

Hey - when I started her up with JUST the xover - you probably COULD hear it at MCO! (Can you say NASCAR!?!?!?)

I think I'll just try and work with the adapters/flexpipe/muffler putty, etc...won't look pretty - but hey - it's underneath!

(I ought to take a ride with a recorder...save the soundfile - before I get it all fixed!) There IS some 'sweet' increase in BWAAA with the Otts, tho. The cats are actually good mufflers!

WAIT!!! - Did I actually use "good" and "muffler" in the same sentence.....SHAME ON ME!

Mark,

Just be very carefull if you go the non welded route. You dont want to mess with CO (Carbon Monoxide) Poisoning.

I had the muffler fall of of a chevy van in Canada on the way home, was going to have it repaired when I got back. after driving for 15 min my entire face was tingling along with my fingers and I was not making much sence. I promptly stopped and had it repaired, it took me several hours before I started feeling right again.

How much is the crossover? And what kind of muffler or mufflers are you going to use?

Jack - The crossover was $325 (For 928 Forum Subscribers - $350 otherwise).

I am using the stock mufflers.

I now have all but a couple of very small leaks plugged. The sound is GR8, and I can feel a difference in power....easy breathin' V-8!

Hey Mark,

I remember reading a thread about shops working on cars without cats and I think it was Jim B. from 928 itl that said one option would be to take the car to a muffler shop on a car carrier without the plates on it and tell them that it is not used on the street, it is only a track car.

Don't know for sure if this would work, but it would be worth a try if you knew someone with a carrier.

Jack the Louie's site is at

Good luck, 928 Performance

Thanks, Dave -

I got a message from Jim Nowak...he suggested buying a little welder and doing it myself - WHAT THE HECK - I think I'll do that...BUT - not for a couple of weeks - my body aches from being under the shark the last couple of nights!

Heck Mark thats even better, you can always use a welder, I can't tell you how many times I wish I would have had a welder lieing around.

Once you get it let us know how much you pay for it maybe we could all get one. LOL
