Update:

Went up to the hotel where my poor shark was left today to try and do a little parking lot diagnosis/repair. Swapped out coils (thanks Eric Dvorak for the loaner!) and still had the same problem... plus the old coil tested o.k. so I'm guessing that's not the problem. Dang. Was really hoping it'd be something that easy. Popped the cover off the fuel tank and checked the fuel pump.. it's whirring away... seemingly functional. After an hour and a half of checking vac lines, etc. - almost everything I could get at in a hotel parking lot scenario I had to give up and call a flatbed. <img src="graemlins/crying.gif" border="0" alt="[crying]" /> The car is now resting at Auto Therapy where Roger (a.k.a. "the worlds grumpiest 928 mechanic"... according to John K!) thinks he can have a look at it before the week is out. Would have really liked to bring it home and futz with it myself, but my work schedule is crazy for the next couple of weeks... to say nothing of the impending visit of the in-laws (this weekend) and the impending birth of my first child (somewhere around the end of the month). So, for the moment, I will trust Roger's careful hands. Updates to follow as we find out what the culprit is/was.

Incidentally, the issue seems even worse now... Whereas before I could give it a little gas, now even the slightest depression of the gas pedal will cause the engine to stall out and die entirely.

Thanks to all who responded... updates to follow.

Brian, What a nightmare! This is what we all fear. It's happened to me more than once (being left stranded). Fortunately, I have been close to home when it happened (if you call that good fortune).

Update:

Shop got a chance to look at it and discovered a stuck Warm up regulator. Seems the WUR is getting power but is not operational... and was stuck in a very lean position... hence, when the accelerator was depressed, more air but no fuel and... stall. Roger (mechanic) says he isn't sure if that's the ENTIRE problem (I'm hoping, of course, that it is...) but it's certainly the main cause. I've had a few problems with the WUR before, but nothing of this magnitude (mainly just rough starts for about 30 sec. until the engine warms up a little). Full update to follow when everthing is back to normal.
