I think I read that the suggested price tag was going to be $140,000. Hmmmmm. In light of that and the anticipated limited production, does that mean they will only let us buy one????

Anyone else disappointed at the prospect of the new 928? I didn't realize it before I started hearing about it's potential production comeback, but I think one of the things that attracts me to the car is that it's not available anymore. It's a great car that everyday people don't know much about. People recognize it as a Porsche, but have a hard time placing it - and I like that! I wonder what a 21st Century 928 would do to that mystique...

hey Morgans...

I feel the same way. I don't mind another Porsche V8...but I don't like the idea of using the 928 name.

I like driving a car that you don't see everyday. Even though the "new" 928 will be very different in looks, I know that I will hate answering the question..."do you have the new version of the 928 or the old?" When you answer the old or the original, you get the "oh, ok" response.

I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one that's not too excited about the possibility of another 928 being released.

Knowing Porsche, they will not call it a 928. They probably don't even like the comparison. 2004 is still aways off. I wouldn't count my chickens just yet. Alot depends on the success or failure of their upcoming SUV. That's not a sure thing either. YMMV.

I agree! The 928 is to old of a cat to be screwed by a kitten!

Certainly there will be no new 928 and the car will have nothing to do with the 928 we know. I can't imagine Porsche would reuse the model number, they're using "catchy" names now: Carrera, Boxster, Cayenne. Perhaps they could name it after a famous road event (like they did with Carrera). Carerra GT might have been a good name for a grand touring car, but it's taken.

I do like the looks of the artist's concept and hope to give it a spin some day.

One thing is for sure and that is that the car will not be built to the same levels as the older 928s and Porsches in general. Personally, I'm excited about getting an S4 in a few months to augment my hot-rod 951 and 924S. Its hard to explain, other than that the feeling I get from a nice older Porsche is more special than the newer, slightly cheaper feeling models.

Cool

To each their own...I personally love my S4 Snoball.

Sorry, I cannot fathom replacing the 'heart' of this beast with a domestic product. Not nearly enough thought went into the domestic product. Although the Porsche heart may be overly complicated for some, it is something that cannot possibly be matched in design by the Fatherland motor. When operating properly, nothing lb for lb can touch it. Nor will the gas mileage come close - or longevity for that matter.

When I was at SITM last month, I was able to witness a track racer - an older model S. This car was incredible!!! It was an early 80's model that the current owner had paid $5K for. Had OVER 250K miles - and it still ran strong - and didn't burn oil - not one bit. Sounded fast, and going up the SCCA hill climb - it pulled strong!!! Sorry, can't see that happening with a Cheby heart - gas mileage or longevity wise.

YMMV-

Jay

I personally hope that the 928 makes a return as the "928 Carrera". No particular reason except that Porsche has always associated the word Carrera with greatness, a badge the 928 never had the opportunity to wear.

Oh, I don't know. Look at the evolution of the S'tangs. I liked the 64 1/2 - 66, loved the 67/68 series, liked the 69/70. Considered the Stang 11's to be reliable Pinto's, things improved with the 5.0L and today I actually look at Mustangs approvingly. Hell, without a 5.4L engine swap (maybe next)year I'm not even competitive with a GT or SVT Cobra unless I catch them out of their powerband while I'm doing 60+ mph in 2nd (auto). West Texas roads are sorely in need of a few curves. This place is FLAT with straight-line roads, so, the advantage goes to Hot S'tangs, Camaro's, and the few odd Firebirds. I plan on resolving the HP problem with a 5.4 L, + 4spd auto. Look at Vettes' evolution, too.
One of my two tours in Deutschland found me stationed in Esslingen a 'burb' of Stuttgardt, I had the hot's for 928's from 77' on and being stationed right next to Zuffenhausen, the final assembly plant for 'almost ' all of the 928's I developed an affinity for the S/S-4 years. It's a personal preference, and we all have our own preferences. Some Shark owners talk about the sad demise of the Shark production run, on one hand while dumping on the, possible, re-intro of the 928 on the other hand. As for myself I just bought my 82' Weissach in May. If you had told me, even two years ago, that I would someday own a 928 - $ 44- 47,000 New - I would of asked you "what the hell are you smoking?" I think all Shark owners are lucky to have arrived at a point in time where the decreasing price of 928's intersected with our ability to pony-up the Dinero while still having access to parts at reasonable cost. Not putting anyone down, just an opinion.
Keep em' running folks.
