Bronto,
I think the only reason you're interestd in it is because we actually had a column in it called "Op-Art".
(Short for Opinion Article).

Default 928 Forum Drama

Come on Adam....this was not all benign like you make it out...I seem to remember way more drama than that...Our antics would put both Metallica and Motley Crue to shame

All the booze, women , drugs..waking up in unfamiliar places...all the long road trips, and the eventual incarceration of several of the group. Remember that time we had to call home to get bail money and then produced probably what will be remembered as the best issue to date..wow...what a long strange trip that was.

Man..those were awesome times.... I remember them well

Later,
Tom

I think I can definitely give some insight into 928 Forum Magazine.

It was created by a group of 928 owners here in the Pac NW. At first it was an enthusiastic and large group. The pool of talent seemed sufficient to sustain the project. We had a person who could do layout, a couple folks that knew IT, others that could take pictures, a few that could write. And best of all, the labor was cheap (read: FREE).

We started out decent out of the gate, but never met our mark to keep the mag afloat, although maybe with time we may have. The problem was that we had lots of people subscribe, but not everyone paid. A lot of folks didn't pay. That's a problem because when you publish a mag, you are commited to a certain volume, whether or not you sell each issue. We were at the minimum volume, so it didn't really matter what we did with the magazines since we had paid for them. So, since the cost of the individual magazine per each issue was a sunk cost, I sent out the mags and relied on people paying after the fact. I could have held them and said pay on your subscription request before I send this out, but frankly, I didn't have time to micromanage the subscription list, I was already out the money, and truly thought the people would pay once they got the mag. Some did, a lot didn't, but since the mags were already paid for I kept sending them out and occasionally following up with people asking for payment. When the second Volume (year 2) started, I was still committed, and shipped it out to everyone on the previous year's subscriber list with the hope that they would re-up. Most didn't.

But internally the mag staff just withered away. People were going through a lot in their personal lives, and just didn't have the time to commit to the magazine. When the layout person dropped off, that was the end of the line for 928 Forum being produced by volunteers.

Obviously I'm very disappointed in how it all turned out. I am very thankful to those who were on the Mag staff that stuck it out to the extent that they did, and to all the folks that contributed. If anyone has any questions at all regarding the Magazine, I invite you to email me directly at

Adam,

Glad you told the story of why the Magazine stopped. I had tremendous guilt that it was my upcoming story and you having to pay for some pictures that got the magazine into trouble. I wanted to reimburse you for those by the way but never got a reply back on my offer.

I do remember the magazines were getting better with each issue. It was a worthy venture but from the little I know about the magazine business, it is all consuming. Thanks to you and the others for giving us "our" magazine for a while. It is missed...

Cheers,
Constantine

I think I remember seeing that about you guys on one of those behind the scenes type of shows on SpeedVision a while back. Yup, pretty sure it was you guys.

How about an auction. More money for Haiti.

I'll make a starting bid of 2x times cover price for a copy of every issue you've got.

Yeah, remember this cel phone conversation while getting the Mark A racecar story?:

Me: Tom, wait IN FRONT of the terminal so I can see you, I'm driving by right now.
Tom: I AM in front of the terminal.
Me: I don't see you.
Tom: I'm right here.
Me: Did you get a ticket for LAX or Ontario?
Tom: Uh oh.
Yeah that Middleton, always a kidder.

DOH!, forgot about that. Now I'm going to be too embarrased to look at those old issues.

No worries at all Constantine, I'm sorry that you felt any guilt at all. You were one of the many non-staff collaborators that were trying to help make the mag something special. I don't know if you ever got your story published in another magazine, but if you have publishing rights to the pics, maybe you could post it online somewhere. It's a wonderful story with some really rare pictures. I wasn't concerned about the reimbursement, what would I have done with it? It wouldn't have saved the mag. So please don't feel bad. The fact that you have the pics means that they are one step closer to being published which in my mind is worth the price.

Now that would be downright scary.

I appreciate the gesture Don. Let me see what I've got and then if there is going to be money involved we'll have run it by RV. I do have to give props while we're on the subject that without John Dunkle and Rennlist, there would have been no 928 Forum Magazine at all. John openly allowed us to promote the magazine here without asking anything in return, even contributed his personal time to work out some glitches with our website, and basically at every turn encouraged the magazine in any manner that he could. I think he appreciated that it was basically an undertaking by enthusiasts for enthusiasts, and he could definitely relate to that concept.

I was sorting through my library over the Holiday, and found all the 928 Forum mags. I skimmed and read through soem articles. I was impressed, as I was then, to the contribution and quality of it all. I'm glad to have them in my collection.
If I hadn't said it before, thanks Adam and all who put 928 Forum together.

Remember that; you got caught by airport security with a zucchini in your shorts?
