Default 1982 Engine Mounts, when to replace?

Since the engine is out now is a good time to replace the engine mounts (non-hydro), but at the cost of $300 I'm woundering if trully needed.
Anyway to measure the mounts for crush? Are their any aftermarket alternatives? Has anyone replaced the mounts and noticed a difference?
Thanks-

If the MM's have parted from the metal retainer then it would be good to replace them.
If not leave them alone as they rarely fail IMOO.

If you do need to replace them I sell them for $137.95 each.

Basically what Roger said.
Do a close visual inspection; if they look good then leave them alone but if they are showing signs of deterioration (rubber crumbling or otherwise faulty or seperated from metal plate) then change them.
They do not tend to collapse like the hydraulic ones.

if your planning on keeping the car foir more than 4 years it would be a wise decision to replace the mounts while the engine is out, and it could also be a selling point about the mounts being recently replaced

I agree with Mrmerlin....if you have access to them, and have not done this yet, you will never have a better (or easier) time to do it.....There are alternatives to the OEM at much less cost.

Mrmerlin,
Pointless replacing them if they are good as the 82 and older MM's do not fail from the point of collapsing. They do however come away from the metal frame.

89 928 turbo,
There is no alternative to the older style MM's. You are thinking about the 83 and later type.

Replaced the mounts yesterday. The old mounts were begining to crack I think from engine heat. When compared side by side to new, the old mounts were crushed 1/4". With the engine weight figure another 1/4". So the engine should sit 1/2 higher now maybe less vibration.
To answer the my post question: non-hydro mounts should be replaced simply because of age and wear n tear.
