Default 928 S4 reference in Jan 2008 Motor Trend

What a nice surprise to find the 928 back in print.

The Jan 08 Motor Trend's Greg Brown, in his coverage of the 911 GT2 titled, "The Cure for Jet Lag - Try a Therapeutic Workout at 180 MPH" opens with this:

"It's not commonly known, but jet lag is cured by high speed injections of German autobahn, a volksremedium we discovered long ago, at 180 mph in a Porsche 928 S4."

Groovy! Happy New Year. MM

yeah i read that awhile ago but the figure is wrong. I am pretty sure no stock S4 they tested "long ago" could hit 180.

How about downhill? They're not all flat...

He was probably referring to the Al Holbert car.

jessica alba dosent have big *****, thats jessica simpson. So no, Jessica Alba is perfect, except thatshe's married or engaged or something like that.

regardess fabric, an S4 dosent do 180, that was the simple point of the post.

The number i saw on the holbert car from the link was 171.x , I think Porsche (ever conservative) only quoted 165 as the top speed for the S4.

Don't foget the salt flats are over 6000ft..... So at sea level it should do better....it was common knowledge that it was lapping Nardo at 180mph...... I do think some of the downhill sections of the autobahn with the right conditions 180 is possible with a slightly modified 928 like the holbert car

I guess I need to be more clear. There was no need for you to crap all over the original posters intent. That was a glowing reference to the car you own, and you complain about minutiae that's not relevant to the content. I know you cherish your no BS persona, but give it a rest man.

Ok i stand corrected. I thought that the record time for this car was 170 plus mph. Not the 180. When people ask me what the car ops out at, i can confidentaly say 170, I know car and driver did that in a GT when they tested them in 89) In the article, i seem to recall it mentioning the autobahn. So take that into consideration when you are talking top speeds. Perhaps you are not aware of the column, I am, I read it.

I didnt think a stock S4 could hit 180, at any altitude, at anytime, anywhere! But if it did then HELL YEAH! I thought 170 was the top top top end of the cars. So I happily stand corrected.

And Fabric, enough of your ****, i didnt crap all over the article, i read the damn thing (motor trend column), i am familiar with it. (I am however unfamiliar with the article on the Holbert car.) When i did read it as i said apparently i was misinformed, 180 is news to me today. Ive owned my car for 2 years and I thought I knew what the cars would do. If someone tested the 928 S4 doing 180 at Nardo then thats pretty awesome. Again I wasnt aware of that. But cut your **** already, i wasnt pissing on anyone when i made the comment. If anything, it was directed at the writer of the article, but apparently excellence has said the car did 180. So i stand corrected.

Still, I would love to know more about these 180mph S4's. I understand conservative numbers, but if Porsche produced a car in the thousands that could hit 180mph (which most likely would have been a speed record for a street production car) why would they advertise it as being 15mph slower? 180mph in 1987 is a huge feat! From 320 HP no less!

assuming the speedometer is 100% accurate (which honestly they never are) those cars are over 290K which is over 180 MPH. So there you go an S4 doing 180mph.....WOW! THAT IS FAST!

Has anyone here duplicated this?

So About the Holbert car

Maybe Mark can chime in but from what i understand, that car made 400hp with Devek headers? Haven't we all decided that headers would only add 10-20 hp, if that? (even if its more then 20 hp, it definately dosent make up another 80hp.) So now it seems that the engine in the Holbert car is a bit of a special lump. This would make some sense, after all this was a pre production prototype so to speak was it not. I am sure an S4 with 370-380 HP can hit 180 no problem, but not a stock S4 with 320.

Anyone follow where i am going here?
