Lightbulb Weight of 87 928 S4 motor.....will this work??

I have a 87 928 S4 and I am getting ready to replace my engine mounts and oil pan gasket. I am wondering if this lift will work for holding the motor up while I do this.

http://www.gesforless.com/DB-Interfaces/ProductChild/_reports/displayitem.asp?CategoryID=1&SubCategoryID=6&ProductID=75

If it will work, I can purchase this lift and replace the motor mounts and still come out ahead money wise compared to having a local shop do it!!!

If it wont....anyone have suggestions??

Thanks

Forget this one, go to Cosco, they have one for $200. Also includes the spreader bar and is 4000 pounds capacity.

I bought one for doing my pan gasket.

Chris

PS take someone with you. I didn't and the boxes are damn heavy.

Question

Does anyone know precisely what an M28 engine weighs? I've looked at Renegade Hybrids website, and they advertise that an iron block chevy V8 is 200 lbs lighter than our all-alloy motors...serious bovine fecal matter, in my opinion but I've never weighed them either.

A few years ago, I stopped at a shop and they had a Jaguar V12 pulled out. The owner of the shop said it was over 700 lb...

Normy,
I've got a spare M28/12 complete engine for my car. The shipping weight on a wood pallet was 531 pounds. The pallet might be 15 pounds, so figure the engine is about 515 or so. This is a euro-"S" 16 valve engine, less a/c compressor, alternator, starter, and clutch fan assembly and cast mounting bracket, but does include cast iron exhaust manifolds. I believe the 32 valve engines weigh about 60 pounds more than the earlier engines.
A small block Chevy with aluminum heads, intake, and water pump, with a 4 barrel carb weighs around 450 pounds. If you also use an aluminum block, you could easily be in the 380-390 range.
They really are lighter than the Porsche V8's. It's fact, not fiction.

I have pulled a 350 SBC from a Blazer with something similar, so they are capable of the lift. Just watch for the balance - the one I used had beams coming out further on the floor - the one at that link seemd to have pretty short legs where the lifting weight would be. You need to keep the total CG inside the wheelbase of the unit.
I think the engine weight is listed as 260kg or 572 lbs.

Just a reminder for those who don't need to have the hoist at the ready all the time-- My local equipment rental place has engine hoists like this one for less than $20/day.

As much as I like having tools and equipment, this every-once-in-a-while stuff makes more cents to rent than to own, IMHO. Storage of all this stuff is a chore I'd rather leave to the rental place. Even if you stretched the motor mount job into a two day festival with pan gasket, you are still way ahead of the curve using a rented hoist.

My opinion.

As a guy with one of those lifts, I agree that it's better to rent one because of the storage factor and the $ savings. If you plan on using it often it's probably better to buy, but for occasional use it's better to rent.

Oh, and yes it will life the engine no problem, but just make sure your engine stand can support the engine.

Cool!!

Thanks guys...I will check with my local rent places...I did not realize that they were this cheap, and that is the reason I was thinking of just buying it. Plus you never know when you might need to help out another local shark owner!!
