Default OB vs. NB fuses

After seven pages of searching, I've lost patience.

What year did 928 fuse blocks change from bullet style fuses to ATO fuses?

And - is there a source for the fuse block harness connectors?

Thanks in advance ~

i think 84 was the last year of the old style fuses, but if I am wrong, someone will tell you in 5..4..3..2..1..

Hi, thanks. I think you're right. I went outside of RL and found that the bullet fusses are listed as being for '78-'84.

On another related topic:
Does anyone make wiring harnesses? I've seen arguments for NOT replacing anything but engine looms, but I've seen plenty of posts that indicate the need. If no one makes them, I will since I don't have a day job!

You are correct, the CE panel changed for MY1985.

Not that I've ever seen. Engine harnesses, by far, are more susceptible to breakdown and need for replacement. The biggest threat to body harnesses are PO's. I've made my own replacement engine harness with very good result - looks factory and fixed all problems. I would tackle some of the smaller sub-harnesses anywhere on the body, but IMO, trying to remake the bigger major harnesses would be like trying to rewind your own windshield wiper motor and you'd be better off going to your favorite 928 vendor for a used piece.

Official reason given for '85 MY fuse type change was that more of them were needed, 45 places instead of previous 35. At same time number of relay positions on circuit board was increased from 22 to 26. In reality this change made electrical system much more reliable.

Your '85 had bullet fuses? Can you post a picture of your new board? Did you use bigger wire, too?

JP: I appreciate the analogy. Is there a source for sub-harnesses?

Karen - are you considering swapping a later panel into an earlier car...? This is a very major undertaking - they are not in any way directly compatible...

The only car that would be reasonable on is an 84 Euro since the wiring is almost exactly the same as 85, only the CE panel and connectors are different. All other years are vastly different. I looked at what the conversion would take and it's not worth it unless you are already stripping the car and replacing all harnesses.

No, not exactly. I was intrigued by the ATO fuse blocks on the later MY's ce's.

I'm getting ready to upgrade my '78 ce to use ATO fuses and eliminate a lot of connections by using different disconnects and solder; relay mods, too, in effort to utilize less expensive versions.

I'm also gearing up to make some new harnesses - engine and pod to start with.

I'm digging around for things that others may have done.

Karen, It's wouldn't be too hard to hack the top of an early panel and late panel then attach the ATO fuse part to the old panel. IIRC, you have to change blade connectors because the are different sizes for the wires on the back of the CE panel.
