Alternater
Does anyone know what the cost to replace one is. I have an 84 928S that needs one. I believe the cost of a remanufactured one is around $200.00. I concerned about the labor.

I can't image that the labor would be too much. It probably has to be done from underneath. Should be able to loosen or remove the belt, disconnect it and unbolt it.

Moss, I have a buddy that put a fairly outrageous amount of electronics into his 1980 928 two years ago. He needed to upgrade the output of his alternator. So, he purchased an ACDelco (not sure of what type of mods he had to make to fit it) and it works just fine.
Maybe some food for thought for ya. I suppose I will get flogged later for mentioning this since it is not Bosch and a original Porsche part.

Hello
The alternators where also used in Audi 200, Porsche 931, Mercedes 450 6.9., Also Porsche had 3 versions with different amperage.
Using an aftermarked unit is very nice if you can fit the cooling device to it.
If not then get some fresh air to that corner or keep on changing overheatet units.
Also allways use the rearcover and seal it against oil. Sometimes you see good alternators drowned by a small oilleak abouve it. F.E: the 30 $ Oilpressuresender kills the 1000 $ ( newprice ) alternator.

Labor is cheap if you do it yourself - as others have indicated, it is a fairly simple task. Using the case of motor oil (or a one gallon paint can in my case) to support the alternator while you attach the wires and cooling air duct is a good trick.
Your price on a rebuilt alternator is in the right range. I actually ordered my last one from Pep Boys - the price was competitive with the 928 parts suppliers - but better than that, it comes with a lifetime replacement warranty - no cost for the next one if/when this one craps out.
