Mine skipped 3 teeth when (we think) the tensoner sensor got stuck in my cam belt as well! It happened in qualifying in my last speedGT race, after one lap!
I was really bummed as i thought the valves were toast, but then, after seeing it only 3 teeth off, and the compression on one side being 120psi vs 180psi, i knew we might be ok. sure enough, we re-timed it, and it was all good. never did find the tensioner sensor.

the question is, where do the valves touch? what do we know now?
well, we know that the valves will probably touch at .3" depression. since the cams push the valves down near .4 to .5" depending on the cams, we can see that it normall takes about 90 crank degrees for max lift. (at 20degrees crank, the valves only drop 2mm. They dont even start down until after TDC.)
So, since 90 degrees of crank is 45 degrees of cam movement, how far is 6 cam teeth? i think there are 7.5 degrees per teeth, so we are talking 45 degrees cam movement. so yes, this would cause all of the valves on one side of the engine in danger of hitting the piston. I think 3-4 teeth might be the limit . you might have got lucky though.

THANKS! CAR IS AN 85 32v 5spd LSD.

BIG DAVE- How much for the head? e-mail me at mason@masonfine.com THANKS!

Mason:

The spare head itself isn't useable, but the valves, lifters, etc. are useable. They're still installed in the head, so I'd rather not pull them out until we know for sure that you need them.

Ok.... I went to set the timing, and I can't turn the crank to the 45deg mark....It almost is there, but hits something....I can hear it hitting on the right side (where I suspect the damage)...... Guess they're bent for sure huh? I can spin the cam gear all the way around though.... does that make sense?

It's an 85 5 speed.... And I'm done. It's going back to my mechanic....I can't pull the motor in my garage- and for all I know, I may have damaged it worse by spinning the cam gear to get the engine to turn.... Yesterday I was able to rotate 360 deg.... Today, after working to set the belt, I can't turn all the way. Maybe a valve head broke off, who knows. I'll post again when I'm free of this uncertainty.... I admit defeat here, but it's ok.... I messed up huge.

45 or anywhere near 45 degrees should be safe . the fact that it is "hitting" something, AND the fact that at that point, you can rotate the cams 360degrees, is not a good sign. could have dropped a valve, but that is rare from what ive been told. can you rotate the cams to alter that position and see if the crank can be rotated, without using a lot of force?

since the euro S is also a non interference, why doesnt it have a 45 degree mark to lock the flywheel at when doing cam related work??? ive always been puzzled by that. I remember doing scots euro cam set up and having the flywheel at "0" and feeling some contact with valves and pistons until i wiggled things around a bit to get the cams near the proper position with the marks. I didnt use the flywheel lock until it came time to crank the crank bolt to torque.
On the S4, i usually leave it on the entire time (locked at the 45degee mark)

Mark, I rotated both cams, put them on the marks, moved the crank, and the most I can go is 270deg back or forth....It's hitting something solid, I can hear it in the right head, like a THUD. Oh well, back to square one, both heads coming off AGAIN. I feel like such a dip****, and my mechanic, who is my friend for 12 years now- He probably thinks I'm a major dip****....Especially now that I'm bringing the car back not even a week later, CRASHED and BUSTED. That's how I feel now- CRASHED AND BUSTED. I need a couple valium and beer double shots...That would probably help. ANYONE HAVE A 32v MOTOR THAT IS GOOD>? Just checking....

If I took drugs and beer every time I droped something into a running engine or set my car on fire I'd be feeling pretty loopy by now

Situations like this build character!

Thanks for the kind words...I'll do what I can to chill out.... She just rolled away to the shop. Like I said, my mechanic is soooooo pissed at me... And he's my friend, which make this worse. He always takes my ****.... and gives me parts at cost etc etc... I'm not easy to deal with, I must have called him at least 2 times a day for 60 days to keep him on the burner to finish my car- and then 98 miles later, shes back to square one; ALL OVER AGAIN. Cost $4k to resurrect her , and now this trip - who knows!? A Lesson in patience- and mechanics. DAMN THAT BELT SYSTEM!

Mason - you said the right cam gear is off 6 teeth. Is that the passenger side or driver's side cam gear? It's unlikely (but possible?) the grommet could have caused the skipped teeth - the timing belt would have acted like a "bumper" in a pinball machine and sent it flying.

Resistance at 270 degrees of rotation indicates to me that the cam gear (or camshaft) is out of sync with the crankshaft or the camshaft/camshaft chain snapped.

BTW - did the previous work done include replacement of the cam gears?

Have few beers - it helps sometimes!

I think you mean interference.... Either that or you're on Mike Simard's drugs and contradicting yourself again.

I did not have any chains or gears addressed, as they appeared servicable and the car has 128k on the clock. I have sent the car to the shop, and I'm trying to chill out..... Using whatever crude and easily attainable methods are at my disposal. Seeing that I'm broke, I can't really afford beer. I got a bottle of german wine [how appropriate] as a holiday gift - my first bottle of german wine (can't say much about the wine- but they have great beer !) I also went to the nursery and got some medicinal herbs....SHOULD DO THE TRICK for now. For tomorrow....i MUST PUT THIS **** BEHIND ME, or I'll be one or all of the following: single, jobless, homeless, and or dead. Bleak I know, but this is the life of a car junky.....AS YOU ALL KNOW TOO WELL. BE WELL MY BROTHERS- Hopefully I'll see some of you guys this summer when the meets go down.... I might be in a 911 though , LOL Just kidding. Anyone can own a 911, the 928 takes ***** to own.... As I'm so delicately experiencing...... Also, Since the 928 is so freaking difficult to learn/maintain/repair.... it's commonly thrown in the junk pile.... Which is good for Roger and Mark, and it's good for us too; It means it's a slowly dying species, and it's unmatched beauty slowly becomes a RARE BEAUTY as well, and that; my new friends, is what this Philly boy is ALL ABOUT! CHEERS!

I leave you with two pics of my COOL CAT- Cheetah....There's a lesson to learn from his royal coolness....DIG IT!
