Post Too Tall

I am short on headroom in my 86 due to being 6'4" and having a sun roof. I have to recline a little more than I would like to. Is there a way to lower the seat??? Are there any affordable replacement seats that would help???

Ted, there's a 928 owner I know who's around your height, maybe a little taller, pulled the stock seats out and replaced them with Sparco seats. Also Brendan has custom seats as well. In both cars, one and S4 the other a GT you sit far lower than you normally would so there is plenty of headroom. Don't know what seats Brendan went with but he'll probably see this thread and answer.

Hey Kaz.

Ted928... Your height in a 928 is not a quality that thes egerman guys who designed it ever took into account. Its almost as if they went to the italians to measure headroom....

The seat, as I have seen the rails, etc because I did replace them with aftermarket seats, don't seem like they are adjustable down on the OEM stuff.

I sold my interior almost as one piece, and bought Cobra seats. They can be found, for example (no affiliation) at www.subesports.com

I am not sure if you could say they are "affordable" but they are well worth the value. Lower, for us tall guys (6"3", with a sun roof myself), and also quite a bit lighter. Each oem seat is about 50lbs, whereas the cobras that Ihave are around 14lbs. Big difference. These are non-adustable, fixed seats that you bolt in with special brackets. ONce you fix it, you are set, and I am MORE comfortable than I was in the original ones. I have the Imola II (wide) for the pass. side, and the Suzuka wide for me. The suzuka has a higher side wall around your thigh. They look the same from the windows.

I used brey kraus brakets, and have a slider on the pass side for accessibility to the rear for a baby seat.

I have not tried it with a helmet, but no more rubbing the bald spot with these seats.

Thanks for the input. I need a seat that is somewhat adjustable so that my wife can drive it when she starts wondering why I can't part with it. Has anyone lowered the existing seat?

Ted,

As a fellow tall person, (6'4") and owner of 928 with a sunroof, the solution I found was to replace the power seats with manual ones. They bolt up, slide back and forth, have adjustable backrests, via a **** on the side, are significantly lighter...... and give a bunch more headroom.

I recommend you find someone's 928 without power seats and ask to give their car the head room test. I think you will like the result.

Good luck,

Ted,

I am 6'5" and can fit fine in my '87 S4 with sunroof and power seats. I did have to adjust the pedals a bit for a good fit, but headroom is not a major issue for me. Keep checking, there must be some way to adjust the seats for you.

I am 6'7" and although my driver seat is touching the rear seat and I only have an inch of headroom left. It is the only sports car I have found where I am comfortable, and no covertables don’t work because I look over the windshield.

Don't forget, there can be huge differences in torso/leg ratio from individual to individual. Just have a look around the table (or bar, as you might be disposed) and notice the relative "tallness" of the seated people, and then look for some surprizes when they get standing. I'm 6'2" and have headroom issues with my shark, but I have to slid up to the pedals a bit. Damn.... I might have been a basketball star!

You raise a good point about the difference in body proportions. After all that time sitting around in bars, I must have been noticing the wrong things!!! That explains the difference in opinions or maybe the S4's were redesigned for more headroom??? I have a friend with an S4, I'll check it out.

I test sat an 87 S4 with power seats and sunroof. It is identical to my 86S. Therefore, BrianG must be right - the differences must be due to body preportions. Anyone interested in upgrading to a power seat for manual (must be black leather in good shape)???
