I bought a 3/4" torque wrench from JC Whitney or Harbor Frieght, can't remember which, for about $60 on sale. Works great. I don't have to use a breaker bar because of the long handle. With the 3/4 size, I don't have to worry about snapping my tools (which I've done using a 1/2" drive), and the torque range goes up to 350 lb/ft. Makes the whole job very easy. Also good for removing and replacing rear axle nuts. 1 1/16" socket fits just right.

Have you pulled the dipstick to check the engine oil for metal to do this the best way is just after the engine has been running however since it wont turn(your engine) you can still try but you may not get very good results.
Put some oil from the dipstick on a black piece of cardboard or black plastic, go into the sunshine and look for sparkling pieces in the oil if you find them then is a good bet that a bearing has disintegrated or is in the process of doing this. For better results you can remove the oil filter and pour some of the oil on the same black piece of cardboard , finally you could cut the filter open and look for bigger pieces if you find small pieces . If however you dont find metal sparkles then that could indicate a headgasket has let coolant fill one or more of the cylinders and the piston is seized in the bore, and since you have a non interference engine even if the belt was broken it shouldnt let the valves hit the pistons. Can you give any more info about this car and from where you got it and under what circumstances?

BTW...........the crank nut size is 27mm...........use the correct tool for the job or there'll be grief.

MPDano,
Then there is the dreaded head etching/migration of coolant.
The horrors of crank walk ( uncommanded internal machining of mains and journals).
Who knows what lurks in the pan...?
Good luck guy.
Xlot,
218 ft lb (Lb Ft)?
Is that the conversion from 295 Nm?

That would be next thing I pull off if I get nowhere. I'm gonna let it sit in the Mystery Oil over the holidays and give it a turn when I return in 2008.

Two weeks ago I bought a project car too. The trust bearing (bottom half) broke and then slowly the crank ate away the top half. In two weeks it managed to move so much forward that it pushed out the front crank seal and resulted on a major oil leak (1/2 gal in 2 min). The owner was told that the engine siezed and that she should sell it. I bought it for next to nothing and decided to look and see if the engine is salvagable. It was runing but after taking it apart from the botton it was apperant that it wasn't salvagable. The colour of the oil was like a nice bronze metalic paint! BUT here's the good part.....it wasn't a 928 but a Mazda Protege and managed to score an replacement engine for a gallon of Mobile 1 and an oil filter (~$65)!
