take off the intake tubes and look down the small holes on top of the cam belt covers there should be a mark on the cam housing and the rear side of the cam gears, they should all line up when the the engine is at TDC

The cam is marked with a small (1/16 to 3/32") square notch at the back of the cam gear. This should match within a half tooth of the mark on the cam carrier. The notch may be filled with dirt which can make it difficult to see.

They are hard to see. Mirror and bright light are helpful when the upper timing covers are off.

Borrowing a pic from another active thread:

I think they look like this in all MYs:

(Note the notch at the left of this gear, and a little notch in the rear of the timing cover that lines up with it.

That particular cog in the cam gear got red paint last time I did the timing belt, as did the pointer behind, It made it alot easier to make sure everything was at TDC when I started tearing everything apart again to change the waterpump. (You know you will tear everything apart again, so why not?)

I used some red nail varnish on the cog pictured above; I used it to mark the 45 degree point, so that if the cams moved during the timing belt job, I could reposition them easily. The notches on both sides of the cog can be used to find TDC (assuming the timing is accurate).

NJ, is that cam gear (pictured above) on backward???? Shouldn't notches face the cam cover mickey mouse ear? Could this be why the belt is not tracking centered on the gear?

There is a mark on the front, but the notch (hard to see) is at the back toward the cam housing.

I think you are right, it does look like the notch is facing the motor. False alarm, sorry.
