Check the kick down switch under the throttle pedal it may be stuck open.
Does it have a kick down switch in another position that has been tripped - some owners add these.

Bingo! The switch didn't seem to be stuck so I tapped the pedal to the floor a few times before starting it and now the tranny shifts like normal. Thanks!

Hi Roger, this is David Webb. You already have my email. The 79 that I was having tranny problems with is the one that was totaled by Stewarts because it needed a rear bumper cover and bumper shocks. Since they cut off the old bumper cover with a saws-all, I bought another on eBay, bought the matching gold paint, and have so far put a single coat of base primer. It still needs a whole lot of sanding; especially in the Porsche lettering because I removed 2 coats of paint from the used bumper cover that I bought. I've learned that there is a huge amount of work to get the lettering to look good. The weather hasn't cooperated and I don't have a climate controlled paint booth so it is still unpainted. Once I'm able to paint the bumper, I'll apply for the salvage title so that I can drive it to the monthly gatherings. David
