Oil Level.
How much oil does the US spec, 1983 4.7l 16 valve motor hold? I don't yet own the owner's manual. It has been ordered, is suppost to be in the mail, but I don't wanna wait.
On this motor, how common are false highs and lows?
How much does leaning the engine just a bit make on the level on the dipstick? Side to side, front and back?
Thank in advance.

I don't know how to answer your questions about the affect of non-level surfaces on dipstick accuracy, but my 84S w/4.7L engine takes 8.5 US quarts when the oil and filter are changed.
As far as Porsche is concerned, the quantity of oil is determined by the dipstick.
Side to side won't matter too much, but fore and aft will make a good bit of difference.

If so, I've been getting some very strange readings.
I have a feeling that side to side makes a bit of diffrence, otherwise I can't explain why when my car is leaning toward the passanger's side, it's a little bit overfull, but when it's level, it's a bit underfull.
I'm glad that the for and aft would make a good bit of diffrence. I thought I had run the motor way low on oil, added some, and now am WAY overfull. When I checked the dipstick the first time, the car was leaning slightly backward, and I couldn't find oil, at all. (motor doesn't run right now so thats OK)
I broke a t-belt, not my fault! I'm eighter in for a lought of work, or just a good bit of work.
Wish me luck, as I'm hopeing the US 4.7 is a non interference motor.

As the dipstick is located towards the passenger side of the oil pan, height variances from side to side will apparently affect the reading.
Awhile ago, my mechanic checked the oil level while my car was parked on a sloped area, passenger side high. He added 2 quarts of oil.
When I retreived the car I noticed it was blowing smoke at high throttle. Checked the oil level (with car level) - sure enough, 2 quarts over.
Had to use the oil change pump I use on my boat to remove those two quarts.
My advice would be whenever checking any fluid levels, make sure the car is first parked on a level surface.
