This may seem kinda cheesy and against Porsche standards, but I bought a set from Autozone when we first bought the car in 2001. The locks have been serving their purpose very well since then. $17 I believe the locks were..

HF sells wheel nut/bolt removers. You could use that as a last resort to get the nuts off.

Porsche North Scottsdale was happy to sell me one for ~$35 - I imagine most dealers would be happy to order it... unfortunately it only lasted me about 60 minutes...

Once you get them off - remove them anyway (so borrowing a key is good).

If these locks get over torqued - they don't come off - A body shop over torqued one of my rears and I blew out 2 key sockets trying to get it off (they expode into pieces). Tried a sacrificial socket jammed on the domed head - its well designed for its purpose it just tears off of the body.

In the end it was 2 hour dremmel exercise through a "keyhole" to drill/grind the remainder of the locking nut until it literally fell off in pieces.

My wheel stud was scarred in the process and some slight damage to the wheel interior dome part (virtually impossible to avoid).

Believe me - you don't want to ever have to do this...

I feel your pain Alan; some a-hole did the same thing to my 944's wheel locks at Discount Tire.

I bought the last 928 with the old wheel locks frozen in place - had been for 3 years. I took a 3/4 hole saw and drilled them off. It sounds extreme - but the aluminium gives, steel stud is a guide, stop just before the wheels, and the end of the lock comes loose. The studs weren't damaged and it only takes 5 minutes per lock.

Definite last minute resort - but a good one.
Good deal on 4 slightly cracked and rotted tires...

These are not the same kind of locks you had, unfortunately.

Here is what works, and works VERY well.

http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_1...word=wheel+lug

$40.00 and had it out in 10 seconds.

I highly recommend it.

Did you get them off the shelf at Sears or did you have to order them?

Right off the shelf, my Sears that is local and a smaller one. I went in to find a 12mm Triple Square for a fly wheel removal, and didn't think they would have the Lug Out. They had 3 of them and no Triple Square.

I have a feeling that these will come in real handy and at the price, it can't be beat. When I used it to yank the wheels off the '81, there was no damage at all to the locking lugs, so if I end up finding the key, I'll be set to use them again.

Kinda makes the locking lugs look worthless, eh? Anybody that can sneak into Sears and make off with the $40 tool will get past the locks in seconds.

I don't know if these would work on the later style locks. They were quite well designed in how the tops break off - there was a very small amount of material available - not much shoulder accessible - of course now all I have of it is a pile of shavings and two big chunks left... but looking at it it wasn't promising and trying a snap-on removal tool didn't work at all....

I've received the kit from Greg (Blown 87 - thanks, bud) and the replacement lugs from 928 Intn'l.

I think I'll give 'em a whack later today.
