David it was insane fun thanks :-) Charley the limits are 74mph and effective safe travelling there is whatever your speedo can handle, there are no croozers.

Hello Heinrich
Sorry I missed you. I'm back at work now, offshore Boston. I left home last weekend in 31deg C and arrived to about -5C here! I don't know who's car that is, never shows up at the Porsche Club but I have often seen one of that description and colour for sale in the newspapers. On average I'd say there is one up for sale every two weeks so you should have no trouble finding one. The OBs go for around R50 000, sometimes less. ($7000)
Agreed we are VERY fortunate in that our country roads are excellent, quiet and largely un-policed. Many rural roads are wider and smoother than the one shown. (I know all about the bumpy ones, the stiff suspension on the GT finds them all!) What road is that in your pics? My guess is Eastern Cape. Maybe Oudtshoorn or Graaf Reinet area?
Have a good Christmas and may '08 bring you good things.

Colin thank you kindly for your good wishes my friend. I am sorry I missed you also. No biggie. That was Oudtshoort, and that is exactly the kind of road I like. The roads there are incredible, the quality is a hundred times greater that roads around the Pacific Northwest. The East Coast of the US has great roads like that. Our roads here are really very bad because we take so much heavy freight on them, and they are mostly cement. So it was a pleasure being there. I have to tell you, I cannot figure out how the cameras work on city streets. Freeways they have pressure lines but I saw one where a man in a black leather jacket was crouching by the side of the road with a tripod!!! His entire profile was about one metre by 3/4 metre. How does that work?? Thanks for the pricing info. What woulkd hte lowest be for an S4?
Merry Christmas to you and yours, and wishes of blessings.

In the cities most of the speed traps are now unmanned radar-triggered cameras. Usually permanant. If you saw the old "Gatsometer"-type pressure lines it was probably a traffic census counter. Occasionally, especially in the countryside, and most especially at holiday times, they use a temporary manned radar camera like the one you saw. The cops don't need to be standing at the tripod, (they usually have a remote monitor in the bushes, -next to the braai!) though they often do. I suspect they do this from time to time in a deliberate attempt to discourage speeding through "visible policing". It certainly works!
Haven't noticed an S4 for sale recently but I'd guess at R150 000. Yeah, really. Now you'll remember why you live in the US of A! I wouldn't accept less than R250 000 for the GT but there's a lot of sentiment in that figure and it isn't for sale anyway. A concours-winning S4 auto and a good '90 GT with the wrong wheels both went for R230 000 earlier this year. I'll keep an eye out for prices next time home.
