Options for factory sports shock renewal
Hi,
1990 S4 auto with 70000mls.
I have the factory fitted boge red sport shocks all round on my car and they are probably getting in need of attention.
Does anyone know if these can be rebuilt - I understand that they are NLA from boge or porsche.
Failing rebuild, what shock out there would most closely resemble these performance wise. I do not want something very stiff as New Zealand has lots of roads & few people to pay for their maintenance so some level of suspension compliance is required to enjoy driving very far when one cannot get up to a speed to suit the suspension better .
Many thanks,
Myles Garmonsway

Don't know where you would get Boges rebuilt in NZ.
If the car feels "floaty" over slight crests with gentle bends it's time for new shocks.
I like Bilsteins but youmay find they are too harsh - but having said that I've not driven a 928 with Billies and standard springs.
I suspect that normal Boges - ie non Sport wil be a vast improvement on your 17 year old shocks and won't sacrifice ride comfort. Try Roger at www.928sRus.com
Strange I thought NZ roads were OK (and I lived on Waiheke) in comparison to London - then I moved to Sydney - must be the Capital city with the worst roads in the world.

The Boges aren't rebuildable. You can get new red Boges from Porsche for just a bit over $200 per corner. My car came with red Boges. I now have Bilsteins with the stock springs and like them. I have put new Boges on a few friend's cars, and the red Boges are every bit as good on the road. They feel very different on fender push, but on the road, you cannot tell them from Bilsteins. They cost about the same.

The Boge reds are still available and I sell them for $1080 a set.
On my GTS I went with stock Boges ($425 a set) and Eibach Springs ($290 a set).
Very pleased with the result.
Bilsteins were very harsh and gave me no extra advantage IMOO.

Bilsteins with stock springs do not seem at all harsh to me. I had a lot of trouble with Bilstein/Eibach on my car, but not with Bilstein/stock springs.
