I know i hit you pretty hard on the 19.. But the only thing for sure is, if you dont ask for it, you certainly will not get it. it may pull 19, but not in the rennlist community we do have a habit of, and I am guilty of beating the prices as low as we can on our own cars.

Not "we". Just some.

I think the sale price is reasonable. Good luck with the sale. -Ed

What would you pay for an "updated" 89 GT, outfitted with a Murph kit?

I believe that the price is RIGHT ON! Having attended quite a few GTG, and 928 Rallies, I've had an opportunity to see many examples of the breed. They range from absolute concourse condition beauties to ragged out POS. That being said, I'd say that the majority fall somewhere in- between. And of those, I'd say that many of those would be inclined toward the latter. I think we ( Hard -core Rennlisters) have a very narrow -minded view of 928's in general We forget that as a hard core fan base, we're in the minority. There are thousands of 928 owner out there who don't even know of Rennlist- They, to a large degree, drive the market, not just us tight fisted - do it yourselfers. Also , don't sleep on the fact that 5- SPEEDS do , in some instances command a $ 2-3K premium oved their Auto counterparts. I, as most of you do, probably have more in my car than it's "WORTH". NADA is bull**** for older cars, anyway- all dealers go by the weekly- issued BLACKBOOK. But I wouldnt sell my '88 5- SPEED w/ 220 LSD for LESS than $ 19K! STOP THE HATEING!!! I hope he gets every penny ( Bitches)

It's interesting to compare this thread with the "How much would it take ..." thread. On the latter there are plenty of (non-fantasy) posts that contemplate >>$10k to bring their 928 into 'perfect' condition. $7k for paint, $2k for suspension, motor parts, yada, yada. I bought my '89 for a figure close to KBB/NADA and have dumped >$10K just in parts to get it almost to the point where it runs really well. That figure doesn't include my time nor some of the upgrade/cosmetic items.

I don't get the logic of some of the folks 'round here. Some of you will look at a $15k 928 and (correctly) knock down the price by $5k or more because it needs tons of work. But, on the other hand when a 928 appears that doesn't obviously need tons of work everyone complains about the price?

$15k to $20k for a 928 that needs very little work is too much. But $10k for a 928 that needs $10k in parts and has tired paint is a good deal?

(Note: the above is not intended as an indirect opinion on Afshin's '87. I'm just bitching about thought processes. Afshin's is a very very nice 928 and the scheduled maintenance is up to date. I haven't done a full look-over of the car. It may or may not fall into the category of 'needs very little' but from the time I spent underneath it I'd have to lean towards 'not needing' rather than 'needing.')

I'd ask $21k for mine if my wife told me to sell it. Sadly I probably would get no takers.

As someone mentioned, if all the updates are done - it is probably worth it.

PRoblem is, most people who buy these things don't realize that most need $5-10k in updates/maintenance to make them "perfect"... except for everyone that's on REnnlist, and we've already got our own projects going on.

If a NEWBIE enthusast showed up, that'd be a perfect buy!

Ok maybe its just me but why would you sell a beautiful 928 like this to buy another 928? I can see adding another car but I would be happier than a pig in poo to have a car this clean.

Why does Gretch list a "fire extinguisher" on his list of car mods?

Expecting something?

Guys
Afshin sent me some documents that detail the amount of work done to the car......WOW I am impressed....Worf928 (david) keeps excellent records with photos of all work done.....and a really sweet program of tracking future work....amazing.....I keep a running excel spreadsheet of the work I've done & thought that was pretty good until I saw Afshins file...makes mine look downright crappy.....there are very few 928's I would consider selling my 928 to get & Afshins is one of them......I keep thinking....a 5 speed LSD with about 1/2 the mileage of sharky.....tempting...very tempting....but of course I am "capt no bucks" so sharky will have to do for now......

Another way I look at it is like this......what 928's would I not want to compete against in a concours.....Chuck Z is tops on that list.....Afshin isn't far behind......there are other 928's out there that are "nicer" than mine, but you really need to be a concours freak to win...Afshin understands...since he's a freak like me!

Whoever gets this 928 will is very lucky.....I told Afshin just to keep it...since its just about impossible to replace unless he spends WAY more $$$$

Good question. Short answer.....I'm at a crossroads with this car.

As it stands it is seriously a great weekend driver which I can enjoy on short or long distances reliably. I can also take it to car shows and not feel like the car is out of place. It would do well in a show and shine class.

The problem is that I'm a perfectionist and the details are important to me. If I keep the car I will be obligated to spent $3 - $4K to have Paul install new leather covers on all the seats and trim so it all matches and looks new. I would also want new carpeting because it's not perfect. I would also want to respray the front bumper and rocker panels to get rid of rock chips. So basically I would be spending another $6K Minimum to get the car exactly the way I want it.

We all know that each car or year has somewhat of a limit as to how much someone would spend for it. Imagine if I tried to sell the car for $25K after doing the above work, would you pay for it? To put it another way, it would be like installing an in ground pool costing $30K in Upstate NY. Yeah the current owner may love it and think it's worth every penny but when it's time to sell it they can't expect to recover even half of what is spent.

So why not go further with this car? I guess my thinking is that there are some really nice 89 GT's for sale at the moment that will cost between $25 - $27K and from the pictures it appears neither will need new leather, carpeting or paint. The engines are a bit tired and the mileage is higher but I'm willing to make the tradeoff. The maintenance is also a question but again I can deal with it. Now the advantage is that if I sink a couple of thousand into an 89 GT I will only be in the hole $2k instead of $6k and it will be on a car that is a bit more rare.

If I can't sell for what I know the car is worth then I'll bite the bullet and head down the slippery slope.

I was talking about this with a coworker who is also into cars and neither of us are quite sure what it is that you are trying to achieve.

If it is a concourse car you may in fact do better going to a newer GT like the one in the Barret Jackson auction where he has a more unique color combination and additional options such as sport seats etc since you do tend to get more points for unique options. On the other hand you have to take into account that you may need to spend more than 6K to get it to where your car is right now! How are the factory cats on the GT? Are they any good at all or will those $2000 gems need to be replaced right now? Is there rust, grease, broken plastics and rubber goodies missing? Does it have the lower pans are they bent or broken or not replaced with aftermarket? There are so many variables you would need to consider. Can't always read a book by its cover. In your case however, you can. You can read your book by the cover. You know it's condition, you know what it needs and doesn't need. To make it a concourse car you know what it will require.

I haven't seen him around in a while but there is a guy named Tony over on the 944 board with a cobalt blue 944S2, he used to try to show his car locally in the PCA and other car groups. He drove to and from shows with blue tape on the front/mirrors and side panels so that he wouldn't get nicks and chips, he literally kept his car inside the house not the garage, the in the house during the winter where he could clean it and keep it from harms way.

If you wanna win concourses you might have the best car you could want to start out with. If you want an 89 GT, go for it! If you want a concourse 89 GT, I again wish you luck but you are gonna pay for it, probubly a lot more than $25-30. All you are doing is "trading" gas caps if you are considering a 25K GT for a car you wanna concourse. You will still have the same problems if not more at that price.

Me, I want the wash and shine, not having to tape or haul/transfer my car to events and not worry about the occaisional chip or scratch.

Good luck on the sale you do have a beautiful car!!

Whatever you decide I expect you to show us at Frenzy in Sept

Michael
