Stupid stupid, stupid, stupid idea! Are you kidding me?!
I cant believe this thread is still on here. If i posted this i would edit it and delete the whole thing then close this thread and hope it gets to the abyss ASAP. Someone is begging for trouble on this.
icsmike, if your car has title issues then thats your problem. You can't just try and erase that with someone else's VIN or title. Not sure what kind of issues you have but if you have a similiar year, you can easily erase a flood damage car, an TMU car, a salvage car, or any other number of other undesireable things that can get labeled to a car. The only reason i could see for doing what you want to do is to put a non-road ready or illegal car on the road, or to sell a junk car to someone uninformed. Both of which are illegal, so i don't see what kind of point you have here.
Someone save this VIN and record it. Thats the best thing thats been posted, so if anyone ever sees this VIN come up for sale they know to stay away.
STAY AWAY!

When you said "buying a parts car thats already parted out"
Yes i get the idea that when you buy what we refer to as a parts car, you would get all that paperwork anyway, but that is a loophole for private parties. I don't know how all this really works...Jim B or Mark A would obviously know, but I would think that any car that they buy to part would have to have paperwork saying that it was dismantled and thus the title is invalid as a road worthy car. I would think the title becomes just a useless piece of paper or a memento. This is an area that i don't think is looked at in private party sales. I know allot of people exchange cars that are sold just for parts but many of then still carry titles and VIN's that when looked up by the local authorities database are probably still valid as being complete cars. This is just an area thats not properly recorded and with this thread i can see the need for this to be looked into by someone really.
I am pretty sure the only people that are really legally allowed to buy "parts cars" are licensed dismantlers. Now again, I know allot of people buy these privately for parts but when the car is done, you MUST destroy the VIN. There is no other use for it other then do something shady, I cant see a legit scenario for using another cars VIN at all.

WOW. Im gonna go back to my little house in ky little 350 people town where its safe. I dont know of this crime **** and dont care. I dont care if the car has a salvage cetrt. or not I was just looking ata an opportunity for a way to keep a shark on the roar in a peaoples point of view legit way. I dont live in a sue me sue you or Ill call the ciops town were backwoods for the most part but true good people. I only need this for an upcoming project that Im scared teh Mo. State Patrol inspection will say they cant find proof I bought parts for it and not stole them, lame but true. You have obviously misunderstood my situation. I bought a wrecked car with a salvage title with damaged parts, I then purchased parts from the internet and plus the hood came with it and the previous owner has no remembrance of where it came from. geez. This is crazy. Im glad im in Clark, MO.......

A question in general: is the VIN/title by law connected to the chassis? I mean how far can you go changing parts on a car while still using the same VIN/title legally?

Its probably possible to change entire chassis to different one as long as its stamped with original VIN when change is done. I know its possible in here and in many other countries. This will not clear rebuild info from title and original VIN will always follow car no matter what. In some cases car can get new VIN in here due to car taxation reasons but even that will not remove its history and original VIN will always be included in records.

It is OK to sell a car with both the title & the complete chassis with VINs.
So how much of the chassis do you have to remove before it becomes a crime? 9%? 99%?
Does not make sense to me that this could be a crime?
It is not a crime to sell an axe; if it is used for chopping wood or by an axe murderer then it is the buyer who commits a crime, or not.
Anyway those sneaky Germans put the 928 VINs in a lot of places

do you know how much trouble you can get in for this kind of transfer?

Mark Kibort... it's just nice to know that someone else was conflicted about what to do with a good VIN, but like you I'm going to toss it... enough said.
I think some people are getting a little crazy about this. I ALREADY POSTED THAT I'M NOT SELLING THE VIN, AND THAT I WAS UNAWARE IT COULD NOT BE TRANSFERED. No crime has been committed.
As I said... thanks for the heads up for those with constructive feedback who have advised me on my misjudgment – lesson learned

Here's a related question:
My local mechanic has a very neglected non running OB928 that the owner abandoned at his shop, it's been sitting there for a year or more and he said he's going to file some paperwork to gain ownership of it, I think he'll have a new title to it when he's done via a mechanics lean. He said he would sell me the car for the cost of the paperwork plus a few hundred to recoup his expense of beginning repairs.
So long story short, if I buy it, would this be a car I can sell legally?

Laws vary from state to state but you are usually supposed to notify the state that the car is being "junked" . Several states BECAUSE of the sale of stolen parts require that you PROVE that the parts used to "rebuild" a salvage car came from a legally junked car. That is what icsmike needs is a way to PROVE that he did not buy or use stolen parts.... So he was quite willing to use this paperwork and sign statements with the motor vehicle department that this car was the donor car for his parts.....Quite frankly E-bay has become a place to sell stolen goods since they often get shipped far away from where the crime was committed. We know of one case where the 928 owner parted out much of his car then dumped the shell and reported it stolen to collect on the insurance....he went to jail ! Most of the rules and regulations are in place because of prior abuses but they may sometimes be inconvenient.

As selling a VIN from a destroyed vehicle is illegal, I'm closing this thread - even though the OP stated he is not actually selling it - now.
