[This is so typical of someone (that would be me) that does not get the answer they want....]

So...the early solids need the shock absorbers,

but the late model solid replacements don't need shock absorbers?????

Correct - I have the later style crossmember if you need it and the solid MM's for $35 each.
Contary to what Doc Bob said do not go with the aftermarket hydrauilcs as they leak.

I took the engine shocks and the MM out of an '80 a day or so ago. The shocks were crap but the MM didn't appear to be in too bad of shape. As far as I can tell, they were solid but the rubber has started to go bad.

While replacing my little engine shocks I found a thread where someone claimed to have had theirs rebuilt. I asked here on Rennlist and got no response. I didn't research it any further. This may be an option for you if you are trying to save $$

I had the experience of replacing the OB solid motor mounts with new factory parts at great expense, because the rubber had seperated from the top metal section. About 6 months later I had to pull the motor again for other reasons and .....guess what? The new mounts had done exactly the same thing. Seemed to work fine, though. Since then I either just leave them of glue them together. My suggestion would to to either update the xmember and go with the solid mounts as discussed or just leave it alone. But don't invest that kind of money in something that will fail in 6 months, and that makes so little difference that you cannot even tell when it does.

How were those small shocks, good bad or not even installed?

The ones I pulled from an '80 were the same way. Seperated from the metal. There is no way for me to tell how old they were, but from the grime on the engine shocks and mounts, they could have been original. It seems to me that the switch to the later cross member and solid mounts would be the best route for longevity.

I am sure this is a stupid question, but when you say "later" how much later do you need to be to have the option of installing the better motor mounts.

83 - 95 use the new motor mounts and crossmember from what I understand.

The Motor Mounts at DC Auto are used and not worth putting in unless you are desperate.

Dan,
You are correct on the later style MM's they were used from 83 to 95.

I had put in new engine shocks at the same time and they seemd to be doing a good job. I had the car for 20 years or so, but I don't remember the last time I pulled the motor. So I am not sure the shocks lasted that long, but I as far as I remember they lasted 10 years at least.
