wheel noise dampening tires
folks,
I have some road noise doesn`t feel as bad as in my 85 .I have a 88 s4 should it be louder ,or has my memory faded.I `m running dunlup sp8000.I gonna replace rims w wider gts or993 who has a good price.are immitations ok aftermarket.what tire is good for less road noise and good performance .your opinion on the sp8000.I heard some people spraying the wheel wells with some compound and the underside or the car i read a type of insulations to install to lessen the road noise any ideas ....

Third-hand info on the Dunlops is that they get louder as they get older. I suspect that the cold weather isn't helping any. I switched from BFG ZR-4's to Mich Pilot MXX3's and the new tires are MUCH quieter. Time will tell if they get louder as they age; they are less than a year old now and have only a few thousand miles on them at this point.
Aftermarket imitation wheels: There are probably a few opinions on this. The factory wheels are held to a much tighter quality standard than aftermarket wheels sold in the US. Designs and standards for US-sold wheels do not typically include the performance available from your 928. There are exceptions of course, and you can pretty easily identify the good ones by their price I guess.
Meanwhile, there are Cup and Cup-2 wheel sets available in the used market for fairly reasonable prices. Cruise E-Bay, searching on words like wheels, porsche, 17, while blocking the word "hot" (keeps the hotwheels models out of your results), and set a price range that starts around $100 to filter out the bottom noise. You'll see some for sale over the course of a few weeks.
I found a set of new-car takeoffs that were local to me, for abou the same total cost as the tires alone. Be aware that the offsets are critical when you choose, and that the front size on the new cars is 205 rather than the 225 minimum you'd like for your front-engined car. Still not a bad way to find Turbo-twists and the like from new cars. Plan on $1-1.5k for a set that way.
