Default Quality time with the old very brown 1980

Came in to the shop today and put a new timing belt on the old brown 1980 . last weekend at the end on the day ,end of the last session ,as I pulled off the track into the hot pit it stopped running. So today it got the belt rollers bushings etc. and fired right up. What a tough old car so many track hours since 2002 . The belt lost enough teeth that it slipped on the crank gear but there were teeth missing in other spots as well. Belt was at least seven years old ! Two weeks earlier at the Streets I broke the right front lower ball joint sheared the stud and nut right off at about 60 mph ,I was just slightly off the track . The tire jambed back into the firewall skidded and exploded a nearly new tire ! and rumbled out into the gravel 75 feet or so with the wheel laying all sideways . That day I borrowed a car drove to Anaheim and back 240 miles then that evening went out where I had parked it on the track and replaced the ball joint . Stayed over as I had planned and raced it on Sunday. I will finish up tomorrow needs accesory belts ....What a great old car !!

A new kind of serious failure, how exciting!
Why do you think it failed? Was it loose in the taper or did the shaft fit tighly and broke near the joint? Do you have any pics?

I just spend some time today lovin' on a '79 CIS engine with a pressure washer and removed 28 years of grime to reveal a nice engine, these cars can indeed be very rewarding!

nice that it was just a belt away from running strong again.
When i got that "free" 928 from CT, the belt was wrapped around the crank. new belt, and it fired right up. it seems you cant kill these cars, even if you try!

Yea, Jim just has trouble getting parts.
Run it till it breaks.

The Porsche's are built VERY well.

I did the same thing with my 82 a few years back....ran it till the belt said "fagettaboutit". Flatbedded it home and did a refresh. She fired right up. I intend to do the same thing with my 82 Euro. There is A LOT to be said about the 16 valvers. If you maintain them, you just can't kill'em. And when they do die, bringing them back to life is pretty easy. Viva la OB!

careful about washing the engines on 5 speed cars water will rinse down the open clutch fork pivot area in the bellhousing and ruin the throwout bearing/pilot bearing and rust the input shaft and the intermediate plate

Tell me it wasn't aluminum...:<)
Could be all that weight in proximity to the drivers seat.
My greatest fear is of driving after the Thanksgiving Pig-Out, and bending the chassis. :<)
Any twisting at the a-arm or arm mounts?
Do the right thing Jim, bring a rake the next time ...

It was the updated later steel ball joint carrier a used one from a junk car I had upgraded to S btrakes uprights etc. . Porsche did flip over the lower ball joint in 1986 . Monday I will post a photo. I think I will pull the new ball joint and check that taper as well as the other side....you know the one I was leaning on real hard in turn 8 at 6,000 plus rpm in 4 th gear 110-115 MPH ?
