Carfax Please and buying info on 1979 928 needed
We gave up on the 86.5 but however we have found a 1979 928 thats appears to be in much better shape. I would appreciate it if someone could run a carfax on it for me, the VIN is 928910070. Any other info on this year 928 and possible pitfalls on it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I did forget to mention that piece of info, it is a euro model. Are these much differant than US models? If so what are the differances and are the euros more favorable then the others? Any info would be appreciated.

The 910 part of the VIN would make this car a '79 Euro, unfortunatly that doesn't give it the large HP gain that a later Euro S would have.
I have a '79 US model and have found it to be a very dependable car and even used it as a daily driver for almost 2 yrs.
I think that the combination of CIS and lack of some of the later car's "gagets" make the 'ol buggers more reliable and less expensive to own.
Of course as with any year 928 it comes down to how well it was kept in it's previous life.

I own a 79 928...
The early models tended to have a few quirks:
Some electrical bugs can be a problem...but all early model (pre-86) do that. Thnigs like a ground shorts or losing grounds altogether. My heater fan doesn't always want to operate in cold weather. When the car warms up and the interior does also, then it will work. Small stuff really but not fun to track down.
The driveshaft in the torque tube is the heaviest in the 928 line. Later models had a lighter driveshaft in them...not really a problem just a fact.
The clutch in the early 928's can have a few extra glitches than later models. If the previous owner wasn't careful and kept on clutch plate replacement. Then the synchro for 1st and/or 2nd can go out. Also, in the auto-trans, the early 3-spds weren't up to snuff as compared to the later 4-spd auto. If an auto, don't expect a performance envelope of the manual and the MPG factor is less than a manual 5-spd.
The engine is rock solid and performs well. I don't take mine on against the newer domestics off the light. That old 4.5 liter or the 4.7 liter isn't a acceleration monster. It's built for cruising all day at 130 MPH. Many a smart-a$#ed driver has found that out when I pass at 140...
I have driven mine as a daily driver all year round...except when the snow gets too much on the roads. Air conditioning works good, the heat will roast you alive and the car has been driven through 14" of standing water after a sudden rain downfall without even hesitating (That peeved off a few new car drivers that had stalled vehicles in the middle of the road...as I drove by).
I will tell you that carfax is a joke! The database is only as good as the information that has been supplied. One of my vehicles is listed as a "salvage" title and three previous owners. Hmmmm...that's funny. I bought the car from the ONLY original owner and it only had a dent repaired on the passenger rear quarter. But, I only worked at a auto dealership and the salesman don't like to use carfax...since it isn't accurate.

Thanks for the info guys.We just got back from a test drive of the '79.Upon more inspection we find AC compressor disconnected with pulley missing, brakes barely stopped car, very large pool of oil at front of motor on top, hood latch broken, mirrors do not work, auto trans shifts super HARD,drivers side door window leaks water, and some of the interior hardware missing.I think I'll pass on this "$4000.00" deal I have been offered though. It was a suprisingly strong running car I have to admit. This being the first 928 I have driven was quite a difference in the 944 we own..(ok..no flames..lol).However I do think I will be on the hunt for a nice 928...Thanks again guys!
