Post Hood shock and rear hatch shock replacement...any tips?

My new hood and hatch shocks just came from 928 International today....I've heard of things on the 944 board saying people have busted their windshields installing them. How do you do it on a 928 S4???? Is it hard? any special things needed? or am i bein a 'tard' and pissing on my feet? <img src="graemlins/oops.gif" border="0" alt="[oops]" />

I did mine last week and it is a piece of cake.

1) find a suitible prop, especially for the rear hatch. It is quite heavy. Have a frieind help if posisible.

2) there are clips which hold the socket to the ball. Remove or loosen them on the old shocks. My rear ball and sockets were rusted and required some working back and forth to free the socket from the ball. The new shocks may have a dab of grease in the sockets. I added a bit more grease to the *****. I used a small screwdriver to hold the "band" looking clips on the new shocks out, without removing them. Then it is just push socket over ball and snap the clips in.

3) MOST IMPORTANT!!! The front and the rear shocks look the same. They are NOT the same. Do not mix them up. The rear shocks are designed for the heavier rear deck. If you accidently install the rear deck shocks on the hood, you will probably FOLD YOUR HOOD IN HALF when you try to close it. Conversely, if you install the hood shocks on the deck, it will fall and could hurt you bad.

4) Gas canister end goes up.

Good luck,

Greg

Cool

Believe it or not...one of the biggest problems is with people intalling them UPSIDE DOWN.... make sure the cylinder is at the top when the hood is up, or down when the hatch is open!

Normy,

I have read on one of the shock manufacturers sites that to prolong the life of the shock, it should always be installed with the gas end up.

I researched the porsche lit. and here is what I found.

Deck
WSM vol V, body/electrcals Pg. 66-9 (gas end attached to deck), 53-1, 66-10, 66-11 pix of deck shock gas end up.

Hood:
WSM vol V, body/electrcals Pg.50-7 pic of gas end up.

Here's a twist- Owners manual 86 model pg. 49, 69, 71, pix of hood gas end UP. Pg. 73 look closly in the corner of rt. pic, gas end is DOWN!

Probably the easiest way to think of it is that the gas end attaches to the lid and the rod end attaches to the car body.

Euro,

Just prop a broom or stick under the high edge of the hood or hatch. Put a dense pillow, folded carpet scrap, pad, etc. behind the trailing edge of a hood sharp corner. If necessary,... say you are working alone, tape a pad or rag around the sharp corner. Put your replacement shock where you can install it with your free hand. Loosen the 2 clips on ONE shock ONLY with a little screwdriver. Grip that side of the lid because it will move during the next step. Pull the shock off of its ball joints. Replace one shock at a time. Just push each socket over the corresponding ball. Repeat on the other shock. Also pad the rear hatch as it could pop up and scratch paint. The thick canister of each shock is higher than the thin rod.

Good Luck,
HTH.
