Madmarek,
I'm in R.I, and have an 83 5-speed that I just put an 84 motor in, and mine is doing something very similar, runs great till its hot, then dies. You can start it right back up and it runs fine until it dies again shortly after. It has a rebuilt alternator, new fuel filter, and i have just assembled all electrical connections so am pretty sure they are good.
I have read that this problem is exactly what happens when the infamous "green wire" from the distributer is old or damaged. This carries the ignition pulse from the distributer to the wiring harness and the brain. I guess when its old it can "drop" or miss a pulse, and then your whole timing sequence is off and the motor cant run. Restarting it sync's the system again until the next failure. Appearently it can look fine, but still go bad with age. I have an order in for a new wire, hopefully I'll get it in this weekend.
You definitly want to check this. Resistance check is not good enough, I've heard direct replacement is the only fix.
Would like to talk to you local guys.
