Polishing is the way to go, but a lot of work. I did mine with a 4 inch angle grinder to knock down the rough stuff and then a big buffer from Harbor Frieght for the final polish. Took about three afternoons once I got going. Each one easier than the last. Cost of materials next to nothing. Also polished the fan support, top of the water pump, the water crossover, the oil filler and the lettering on the cam covers (not that any one can see them). The Euro S runners are much better castings. On the US runners I found a couple with pits that would not polish out and had to substitute in some better ones.
Alsa makes a paint specially designed for coating polished surfaces. The neat thing is the clear can be tinted with their candy colors to get some very interesting effects. I have not yet tried their products, but am thinking of touching up a set of anodised wheels with one of their translucent colors.- that is if I can keeping the car running long enough.
