Post 1989 928 Value???

Just stopped and saw a 1989 928 for sale here in North Carolina. The car salesman told me both the motor and trans (auto) was in bad shape. The interior and exterior seem to look pretty good.I own a 944 but really not familar with the 928's at all.The guy is asking 5500.00 for the car so I was just wondering if this was a worthy buy or not knowing the motor and trans will either have to be rebuilt or replaced.Any guidance would be appreciated. They seem anxious to get rid of it...could be bought probably even for less.Any suggestions?BTW it has 99000 miles on it...if that is indeed correct. If someone would run a car fax on it I'd appreciate it.The number is WP0JB0929GS862179...THANKS IN ADVANCE!

A rebuilt tranny from 928 International will set you back $2K - then there's the labor (or a DIY project).

Motor - hmmmmm, short block runs ~$2.5K - then the rest of the items will need to be swapped over, along with the traditional Tbelt/water pump job (or you could order a used engine from 20th Street Auto in Phoenix for $3500 - still need to do the Tbelt job though). I would think that you'd be looking at spending no less than $7K just to correct the mechanical's (and likely a great deal more if you pay to have the work done).

Mikey, any chance the dealership will tell you exactly why the engine and tranny are in such bad shape?

Nope the dealer ship said everything was running good when they got it and that it just all of a sudden messed up. They don't seem to know much of anything about the car.

Mikey,
Do you know the difference between the s and s4 bodies? The car is probably an s and the dealer is calling it an s4 because the 4v engine. At that price, run fast. A real nice '85-'86 example with all records can be found for a few thousand more.

OK, We have a 928 for sale, asking price $5500, can be had for less.
Unknown engine condition, unknown transmission condition.
Dealer knows so little about it that they don't even know what year it is (I find that hard to believe!).

Two ways to look at this one:

It appears to be imperfect, with no records - run away!

Or;

It is an 86.5 (very desirable model) with good body and interior at a very low price.
The owner knows so little about it that they are no help at all (or, they know exactly what happened and are crooks).

Time for a gamble. Buy the sucker and fix the bad relays, vacuum leaks, electrical problems, and have a great car at a super price. I have always told my sons that the best bargain that you will find in a used vehicle is a good car with one problen that you know how to fix.

This one could be a super bargain or a money pit. The worst scenario that I can see is a slipped timing belt, and that can be checked pretty easily.

I could have been the one mistaken by what year he said it was.So I won't blame them totally for that as I'm not familar at all with these models. How do I tell if it indeed is a 86.5?..I'm going to stop by hopefully on Monday and take some pics of it and post.Maybe I can get a bit more info out of the guy on what happened and how long they have had it.The only thing they have told me was they took it in on trade and everything that is wrong with it has happened since they got it.I really doubt they know very much at all about these cars other that the fact that they dont' know what is wrong with it.

The last 4 of the VIN are &gt;1000 - which indicates an 86.5

The model is desirable from an updated braking capacity as well as suspension modifications.

Mikey,
For comparisons sake I bought a 86.5 automatic with 110k from a dealer in Tennessee in November for 6k. The car was short on records but had no major defects, nice exterior, nice interior, ran fine. I had the t belt and most related hardware, h20 pump, belts, hoses and all seals in the engine (except rear main) replaced. I have spent about 3k to 3.5k on the car mainly in labor because I do not have time/tools to do major operations myself. I considered this purchase a bit of a gamble because of the lack of maintence history. I think the gamble worked out in my favor. I need to get the a/c charged as my final project. I have had no problems after a few thousand miles. Given that the average asking price on autotrader.com is ~11.5k for a regular old 86 I feel like I came out quite a bit ahead.

On the other hand we just picked up an 87, 106k, very nice exterior/interior, everything works, has a detailed maintainence history including t belt every 45k miles and clean carfax. The only negative I could find on the car was that the trans hesitates when cold. I was able to get it from the dealer at his cost because of this. So again I have paid far less than the average asking price this time i thought I was taking less of a gamble. This car seems to have had a major breakdown in the first 15 miles from home though. Read my current post RED HOT CATS.
Good luck,
Andy K

Mikey,
It's time for an PPI (pre-purchase inspection) It's the only way to know what you are buying. For $200 bucks or less it's pretty cheap insurance. Get a list of items that need repair and figure out your total cost for the car. Who knows, maybe you have a deal on your hands or...not. <img src="graemlins/yltype.gif" border="0" alt="[typing]" />

Thanks for all the info guys.My son went there today and the car lot owner tells him there is NOTHING at all wrong with the car as far as the motor and trans.Someone has taken the carpet in the back in order to try and find the battery..lol.Unfortunately someone has broken the driver side glass and the rain just puddled inside the car over the weekend.I think I'm gonna pass on this one.If anyone may be interested I'll be happy to send them some of the pics my son took of it today. It probably might not be a bad deal at all for someone familar with these but I'm not. They did crank the car but did not test drive it.My son says the engine has a high "whine"
to it.This may be perfectly normal..I don't know. Thanks again for the info guys!BTW this car is in Fayetteville,NC if anyone is interested.

For anyone considering buying a 928 and reading this post I wanted to follow up with the problem I had w/ the 87 I bought. I was able to fix the problem that caused the red hot cats by replacing a $80 electronic part that failed, the ignition module. The transmission hesitation was because of low fluid. I absolutely love this car and feel like I got a great value.
