Post Power steering options - light weight

I wanted to make a change to electric power steering and have mentioned to a few racers that it would be possible to use a electro/hydraulic unit from a 993 as a substitute for our hydrau pumping unit. I have not made any progress yet.

Anyone interested in possibly a batch development project?

Hello Mark,

that is very interesting. What would be the benefits. I'm looking for more assist. My wife finds the steering heavy, especially for parking.

Any idea of the costs involved?

Marc,
I have that pump and I am putting it in my race car as we speak but it is not light weight at 9.75 lbs. I am doing it to move weight towards the rear and to take the drag off the engine. The pump is made by TRW and is quite expensive. Another alternative is the Toyota pump from an MR2. This pump was used on 3 Daytona prototype cars this year at Daytona with no problems.

On our four-wheel-drives we just tinker with the internals of the pump to boost the pressure a bit. This gives softer steering with the bigger tires.

It usually entails simply replacing the bypass spring with a stiffer spring. Costs only a dollar or two. I don't know if this will carry over to the 928 pump because I haven't taken one apart yet.

My pump leaks a bit and It will probably need replacing in the future.
I may be a candidate. :-)
What are the benefits over the factory one, Marc?

I am not interested in increasing the assist, although it would be posible for your 928 by increasing the ratio, decreasing the pulley on the pump. Do not know about the seals, but if it is as overbuilt as the rest of the 928, then there is hope!

Mark, weight relocation is the plan! I will look to audi and porsche for some used units.

Have not looked at the toyota...but will take a look.

With Respect to Increasing the Assist:

I've upgraded my S-4's power steering pump to the Griffith's GTS steering pump. It makes a noticeable difference in the assist while still keeping a very sporting feel. I would not recommend this as elective surgery unless your steering is REALLY tight (mine was). Also, as Jim @ Devek told me repeatedly, it will not be the same as a GTS b/c the steering rack was changed slightly for the GTS, thus making that even easier.

All said and done, I had a very positive experience with Griffiths and recommend the GTS steering pump to those who prefer a more genteel steering feel (a perfect companion to my new GTS clutch BTW, and GTS shifter and and. . . )

Thanks to all who posted on the "assist" matter.

Seth, how much was the Griffith pump and was it a straight bolt-on?

Seth W,

Very interesting… <img border="0" alt="[jumper]" title="" src="graemlins/jumper.gif" /> so in layman’s terms…you are saying I can have steering that requires less effort from my HUGE 20' arms (ya right) to steer the shark yet still feel the road as necessary <img border="0" alt="[burnout]" title="" src="graemlins/burnout.gif" />

You have any further you can elaborate on? Possible cost?

Tim Delarm

Hey guys:

Yes, you get a better parking lot, around town feel and the road feel is 99% the same (just the tiniest bit vague in dead center, and I mean just the tiniest)

I pulled this off of the Griffith website:

928 TIP: if your 928 seems hard to steer in parking or slow turn situations you may want to try out new "HO" (high output) 928 Power Steering Pumps. Our HO pumps offer 25% boost in pressure output which helps reduce the torque strain on your wrists.

Here is the link:

<a href="http://www.griffiths.com/porsche/steering/" target="_blank">http://www.griffiths.com/porsche/steering/</a>

Sorry, I can't remember pricing, but it was a very high quality remanufactured unit. Send your old one in as a core deposit plus small surcharge for the upgrade to GTS unit. Couple hundred buck or so??

Again, its elective surgery. The 25% difference is IMO, accurate. And for me, it was worth it, but it might not be for everyone (I did not do the labor, and it was a couple of hours of work).

Oh, bolt on.

Just remember to tell Griffith that you are using it on an S4 or earlier. I believe that the bracket is a bit different from GTS to S4, but otherwise its plug and play (at least it was for my S4).

Be sure to take a look at the steering tank ($22 bucks) and the hose, another WYAIT thing.

As to being a Rennlist member, I figured I get WAAAY more out of this than the $ I spent to be a member. Great bargain.

Off tangent a bit on the component, but last night i was watching HOTROD TV or something and they where showing some high flow, low amperage electic water pumps that they use on big block chevy hotrods etc etc. Without much room under the hood it may be a tough thing to use on the 928..plus, im not really sure how much drag (loss of HP) the water pump really causes in the 928 anyway, anyone have an idea?
Anyhooo..just throwing the topic out for chat.

Tony - I go back and forth about trying this out...
<a href="http://www.fordmuscle.com/archives/2000/08/electricwaterpump/index.shtml" target="_blank">Link: Electric Water Pump Install</a>

On the second page there is a non-functioning link for a special for Ford Muscle readers, it was for a combination package price of $298.
