Default Buyer Beware - ebay Timing Belts

An initial look and this may not be a bad deal for original Porsche TB's.
However the manufacturing date is 1996 and at over 10 years old they may not have much life left in them, if any.

Years ago my shop did a TB job on my OB.

I stripped some teeth on the TB just a couple weeks after the job.

The shop researched and determined the belt had been sitting in a Nevada parts warehouse for several years, hence the failure.

They re-did the TB job at no charge with a factory-fresh belt.

Roger...........is there anyway to determine the date code of the belt? Is there a number on the box or belt itself?

I've no worries personally (got my new belt from a reputable dealer.......thx Rog) but was wondering if we can warn others.

Saw that George but was more curious about the number on the belt.

I bought 2 belts around the same time this year and each were stamped with differnt #'s. As one of them is on the car I'll compare the other new and unused belt to the number on this belt.

Contitech belts have a Month/Year code shown as part of the printing.
Looked at my stock and they say 08/07 = August 2007 = pretty fresh.

As the belts are a rubber based product they should have a shelf life. In the region of 2 years stored in the right conditions - no sunlight - they should be still good.

I have always prefered the aftermarket OEM belts over the Porsche ones as the turnover is so much higher. I have sold one Porsche belt in 2 years and hundreds of OEM.

Jim Bailey would have a much more informed answer than I but I am probably close to the mark.
