Default Radio Wiring Questions

I'm replacing the original Blau head unit and removing the amp in my '86.5. Foolish me thought it would be just like the '91 I did last year.

Am I wise in bypassing the original fader (**** by the E.brake) and running new speaker wires directly to the old amp location and tying into the original wires there?

Next I assumed I wouldn't need the noise compression coil any longer, but when I unplug it I lose power to head unit, what's happening here?

Lastly, the new unit obviously needs to be grounded somehow. Is it best to attach it directly to the (brown) ground wire that the Blau used or find a spot somewhere on the chassis?

I hope these weren't stupid questions but I don't want to screw up the electrical, everything was working fine.

THANKS!

For speaker wires that is exactly what I did (86.5 also) I kept the noise coil in place for power and used the original ground wire (brn). Sounds like your right on tract.

Yes, bypass the fader, no one uses them anyway, run the wires direct.

You don't NEED the noise suppresor, but it doesn't hurt, so leave it in.

Check the brown ground wire from the old radio to chassis ground with an Ohm meter. If the resistance is less than 1 Ohm, go ahead and use it. If it is higher, run a new ground to the lug down by the CE panel.

The supressor - (an inductor) is in series with the supply - so if you eliminate it you will need to jumper the in/out. Later models have a third terminal for a diode to ground (integrated) - I would also recommend you keep it - it won't do any harrm

Yes dump the fader - not worth keeping - run new wires as you note.

You should be able to reuse the existing ground - If you have a very high powered head unit - maybe consider a bigger wire - go to a known ground point though.

Used the existing ground wire and bypassed the fader, all good.

But the unit kept powering on and off. Every 5 seconds or so, like it was on a cycle. Very strange. Process of elimination brought me to the noise suppressor. I bypassed, jumpered it out of the series and the problem stopped. I guess the suppressor was bad, or maybe not grounded properly? Regardless it was the problem and seems to be working fine now.

Thanks again!
