Alright, so I will definitely need to get this then. Is this everything I will need?

Alternator Cover

Alternator cover seal

Alternator Cooling Hose

Is that the best hose to use...or is there a place I can get one from at a better price? How long is the hose?

I want to make sure I do this right. Does anybody have a guide on installing the hose? Is installing the shroud pretty self explanatory?

Thanks

Yea thats some good advice and I plan to do all of that eventually. But, I'd like to figure out what all I need to order for the shroud and maybe some tips on installing it so I can put that and the new alternator on at the same time.

I'm still looking for advice on how to disable the alarm system. I'm not sure if its stock or not, but I'm sure I'll find out once I get in there.

Thanks guys

Still wondering. The alternator came in yesterday and I'd like to order the rest of the parts ASAP.

Casey,

I don't think the cover and the hose help a lot with cooling, because the air is not directed into the hose from the front, rather it gets sucked in by the alternator. The hose does prevent water and dust getting into the alternator.

Here are some threads showing how it is attached.

Only thing I can think of is you will be needing the mount for the hose, which is attached to the inside left splash panel, if it's not still on there.

FWIW when I read your symptoms I was thinking dead battery too.

Thanks guys. I was wondering...could the shroud be put on after the alternator was already installed?

[edit]
Nevermind, I found this post (https://rennlist.com/forums/928-forum/451506-alternator-shroud-help.html) and it appears that its pretty obvious that the alternator has to be off to install the shroud.

thanks

On the new alternator there are some new things that weren't on the old alternator. I've circled the what I am talking about in the picture. (Isn't my picture but is the same alternator I have) I was wondering if there is anything that is supposed to be connected to these?

We hooked the alternator up without doing anything with the circled bolts and the little red light on the voltmeter in the car stays on at all times. Is this supposed to happen?

Thanks

What I'm really asking is, what are the reasons why the red light on the voltmeter might be on?

Thanks

The red light is on because exciter circuit isn't hooked up right or isn't working. Its telling you the alternator probably isn't generating either because it didn't receive the "go" signal (that connection you noted on the RHS looks like the exciter terminal to me...) or because its faulty (odd because its new).

So I'm guessing the RHS connection is for the exciter terminal (who can confirm)and you should have a small black wire (since its ignition controlled) - that routes along with the big red wire for the B+ terminal - my guess is that it should be connected there on the RHS of what you ringed...

For the light to come on without that connection - the exciter wire is probably grounded somewhere...? does the light ever go out - e.g. when you rev it up?

Alternators will often self-excite & generate due to residual rotor magetism even without a rotor field - this explains why it will work at higher rpm. However in this mode its operating without regulation (maybe why you see 15v).

The reason your battery seems to give issues is that you are rarely charging it and its doing all the work... find the exciter circuit and figure out what its connected to...?

Thanks Alan. The light is on all the time, and I think thanks to you I just figured out why. Is the terminal with the arrow pointing at it the terminal you are referring to?

My friend that installed the alternator wasn't sure what to connect to that so he didn't do anything with either of the terminals that I circled earlier.

Another thing I'm curious about...whenever I turn my lights on, after about 10 seconds or so the central warning light will come on. Any ideas?

Thanks everybody. I really hope I'm on my way to finally being able to enjoy my shark and my new wheels. I would definitely appreciate as much insight into this as possible.

Yes - its clear because I can see the 61 - that the correct terminal ID for the exciter connection. Fix this alternator issue first - you are running at a very low voltage (esp with HL on) so it may just be that... if it persists after you fix the alternator ask again.

Alright, I just talked to my friend that installed the alternator and he said that my car has 3 wires - 1 green wire and 2 reds. The 2 red wires are wrapped together and those are connected to the positive and the green wire is connected to the negative. Apparently there is no black wire. Am I missing a wire or is it hooked up wrong?

Thank you

Well, I figured out that I did have the alternator hooked up wrong. We hooked up the wire to the terminal that Alan mentioned and now everything appears to be working. The alternator light is off and the voltmeter on the car stays around 14. We also put on the alternator shroud.

However, I'm still having problems with my Tail Lamp warning light coming on due to my rear drivers side marker light being out. I want to replace the bulb. I've searched but I couldn't really find anything...what is the best method to replace that bulb? Do I have to remove the splash shield behind the tire?

Thanks
