Default Houston Craigslist - 1989 porshe 928 - $1500 - NOT!!

friend selling nonrunning 1989 porshe 928 project. car has good body and is all complete. all original and clear title.
Called the guy - said it was in good shape etc etc. Selling it for a friend. Swore it was a 1989. Hopped in my truck and drove 35 mins to see it, thinking this is too good to be true, then thinking what if it is a GT. Called the wife, asked her to get ready to go to the bank to pull from our Christmas vacation fund.

Got there, walked round to the back yard, and there in all its glory, was a piece of **** 1980, scratches all over the paint, trashed interior. Pointed out to the guy it was a 1980 (had to show him the door jamb sticker). Got back in my truck and drove home all deflated.

Always a good idea to ASK do you have the title ? ....in your hand ? What is the vin number ? and If I come see it is there any reason why I can not give you the cash and take the car today !! Otherwise no point in going to see a car !! If you make an offer you just become the back up, the floor and anyone who offers MORE often gets the car....Craigslist gets lots of weird adds.

Unfortunately the good old boy could barely understand my accent - it probably have taken me as long to extract any information over the phone

There are some who simply don't look into details before posting an ad.
Then there are those who knowingly lie about what they're selling in hopes to draw people in or scam them.
For instance, this Craigslist Ad in Balto. says that the car's an 87. I've contacted the guy to correct him, and he was an a55hole about it. This was after he changed the mileage from 60k to 90k, and upped the price by $1,000k! I'm guessing that the car simply doesn't exist, and he's hoping that somebody will simply send him a deposit.

I once saw a '90 parked with a for sale sign in the window. When I called for more information, the owner insisted it was a '96 GTS, and one of the last 928s made.

I suppose it's a good thing you didn't see the ad for the 924 turbo for $600.00 here locally (Houston).......you'd really be mad.

This WA state dealer on Craigslist is a fine piece of work as well:

http://seattle.craigslist.org/est/car/492702200.html

He states the car (excuse me, this rare and "Drop dead gorgeous!" 924S) has 38644 original miles and is Carfax certified including the mileage. He later states the odometer doesn't work and even lists the Carfax report which indicates the car had 36003 miles as of 5/95.

In 12.5 years and however many owners a 924S was driven only 2600 miles?
