Default Tire and Wheel question

I have a 1986.5 928. Currently it has the stock five slot dull wheels and 225 50 ZR 16 tires. They are worn down to almost nothing. I am looking to get both larger wheels and tires. I have an opportunity to pick up a set that are 17X7 with 205-40-17 tires for the front and 17X9 with 255-40-17 for the rear.
I am still pretty much a noob when it comes to 928's, I am not sure if they will fit. From the research I have done on the web, it looks like they will fit and I can actually go a size or two bigger on the tires if I want to. If you guys have any advice on wheels and tires of this size I would love to hear any advice you might have.
I attached a pic of the wheels too. I think they look much better than the old dull slotted ones.

Those wheels and tires should work fine. I assume they are off a 993 (or the like) and have a front and rear offset of 55. If so, they will work. The 205 front tire is not ideal, but will work. Replace it with the recommended size 225-45 when the time comes.

yeah, put a set of 225s on the front and you are good to go. 205s are a little small for the big heavy 928

I like those wheels, I had a set on my 1982 from a Boxster. They will definately give your car a more modern look

I figured that the 205's might be a little small. These tires and wheels came off of a Boxter. These are used, but I have been looking for some new wheels lately and I have not had much luck finding the size and bolt pattern. It seems that the choices are very limited whith the 5X130 bold pattern that the 928's have.

I have a set of those in 18's, also from a Boxster. If you can, test fit them. The seller of mine let me mount one of the front wheels for a test fit.

And have you been checking craigslist? I usually search on "porsche" once a day just to see what's out there, and there's always a set or two of really nice Porsche wheel sets. They're usually reasonable priced, and everyonce in a while you can get a screaming deal.

Besides my 18" turbo twists, I got a set of 17" Cup 2's from craigslist, and those were one of those "screaming deals".

If you become a paid member here, you will have access to the member only classifieds, there's always nice wheel sets showing up there too. The really good deals get snapped up very quickly though.

Anyway, good luck with the wheels. You'll be amazed at how your 928 will all of a sudden go from an 80's classic to a modern classic.

That does look a lot better, and your old wheels are much better than the ones I have now.
And thanks for the advice too!!

Does anyone know what the stock size rims are? I think they are 16X7 in the front and 16X8 in the rear, but I am not sure.

16 x 7 ----or a combination of 16x 7 front and 16 x 8 rear

but, of course you could go:

19 x 8 front
19 x11 rear

LIKE MINE!!!!!!

no problem----phone dials are the OEMs to really watch out for....lots of sizes with them that won't work on 928.

S/S4 wheels are plentiful, like I said, usually 16 x 7 all around, some with the 8's on rear. GT/GTS's got the spokes......

Why won't the phone dials work? I figured they all have a 5X130 bolt pattern so they should work.
BTW, Your wheels look great, but they are probably way more than I want to spend for a set of wheels right now, especially with christmas right around the corner.

phone dials that were 15 x 7 (924, 944, and early 928--somebody correct me if I'm wrong) can't be used on 86.5 and newer due to brake caliper clearances. some of these had very shallow offsets as well.

flat disc wheels (from 944) are an offset/width issue as well. Ideally, you could run a 928 8 inch wide wheel on all fours, with something like a 265/50/16 tire.....

when you get to the really big ones like mine, you will have to be very careful about offsets as well.

I am told that maximum for OB 928 (yours and mine) using a Porsche wheel is:

18 x 10 front with 265/35/18
19 x 11 rear with 315/25/19

Mind you there are clearance issues with these and I cannot guarantee you won't rub somewhere.....

you could go bigger with aftermarket 3 piece custom wheels, but you're probably talking about as much as $6k for a set.
