Another Import question...
I'm wondering if it is possible to import a 928 from the UK for track only use and avoid having to get it fully 'federalized' / d.o.t. d.m.v and Thought Police approved. I understand the whole shebang can be over 10k to make it road legal, but what sort of fees would be involved in getting a road car here for track use?
Ok cool. I just love rennlist. I might break my keyboard typing in all the questions I have but someone always answers them. Worth more then the price of membership; You guys are great!
as of today, a 928 from 1980 or earlier can be imported in the US without federalization, cars 1981 and later MUST go thru the process...
you will have to provide a bond until it clears customs and USDOT inspection to ensure the actual car is the year you claim it is and your paperwork is clean
and then there is the shipping thing

Race cars like the 911 Cup cars which raced at INDY with the F-1 cars when imported they must post a large bond which is returned when the car leaves the country after the races...
I know for a fact that you can bring any car into this country as parts. I have a friend that used to do this for a living. As long as the car is disassembled to the point where it no longer rolls and steers, then it is not considered a car. The entire drive train and interior must be removed.

I had heard that a 911 Turbo was "imported" to Brazil ...they simply carefully cut the car in half shipped each piece in a different container then welded it back together.

Don't forget..you still need to deal with EPA regs....The NTHSA handles the crash worthiness of the car..but EPA does the emissions stuff....last I looked, their requirements were for a longer period of time..I think like 30 years or so before exemption...I'll take a look and see if it changed..

you should not have a problem with emissions issues except in the Republic of California..
most states don't even look at cars prior to '96 (OBDII) at this point, and a properly tuned 928 will pass emissions most anywhere without a smog pump

Here's the EPA link...looks like 21 years for emissions..so in theory..anything 1986 and prior..This doesnt sound right..but it's on this page..
