Post I'm in!!

What a terrific feeling to finally be in all the way down to the cam-belt!!

The intake is at the powdercoater along with the cam covers and the front end is open right down to the belt. No little bits of belt on the bottom but lots of road grime all over everything. What a dumb place for an alternator and a A/C pump!! Obviously the Germans have never driven in Canada!! Their whole country must be paved!!

No major items discovered in this adventure but many small ones..... mostly electrical. Loose ground points all over the place.... rubbed-bare wires frequent.... vacuum lines broken or fallen off. It's a wonder it gave no troubles since I bought it last summer. Belt tensioner in "original condition"... rubber boot is hard as a rock!!

One question though..... the starboard side ign coil's H/T tower was packed tight with bright blue powder. Pretty obviously an oxide of copper, but what does it mean? Do I need a new coil? I have the new wire-set.

Great Job Brian!! It is as satisfying as when you get it all back together and it starts right up. My engine looked much like yours. I feel the only way I'm really going to be happy with it is to pull the engine out and clean polish paint and regasket everything. Then maybe some performance stuff!
By the way whose 928 was that behind yours in the Montana pass? Great picture by the way.

Rich Wade has the slow blue one! He lives close, in Canadian terms, about 2 hours away by slow SUV. His is an '85 5-speed, and he's into his at the same time as I'm into mine. We're going to buy everything in pairs. His engine will end up "stainless over blue" and mine will be "stainless over red". We'll be posting more pics as we go.
I'm reading everything I can get my hands on, about S/C and might to that deed as I reassemble. Then Rich will REALLY have the slower car!!

Brian - thanks for the pix. Looks like I've got my work cut out for me just as soon as the temp. here in NE gets to a point where I can work in the garage. Are you doing the water pump too?

I thought Alberta had paved roads!

Here's a story for you. While growing up in Winnipeg in the forties, we travelled by car to Regina. The paved Trans-Canada highway stopped at the Manitoba border and we were pulled through Saskachewan mud by tractors in a caravan.

Sounds as if you are missing the belly pan that those dumb Germans put on to keep the road grime off the engine.

Question

Re: belly pan: Here's something else to check. Don't know if PO put miles on it w/o the pan, but in doing the belt, I found layers of grim in around the "toothed belt tensioning roller" at the 11 o'clock position to the crank. I'm third owner, the second was at the Jersey Shore and there was lots of sand mixed in here where the tensioner oil had leaked out and collected. When removed and examined, the roller sounded really gritty and did not function w/o resistance as it should. So that is on order, another $100. You really have to be a detective in this line of work.

dont forget to recondition the oil pump. It simply has a shaft seal and an o-ring seal around the housing.

Chase all the holes out with a tap, especially around the waterpump. I had to use some thread inserts as the PO buggered some of the holes by using too short of a bolt and ripping the threads out.

I also used a lot of anti-seize and new hardware almost everywhere.

oh yea,

check all the belt gears. They probably all need to be replaced. even the steel crank gear. Mine was considerably worn.

The later years have a different tooth profile on the crank gear to prevent cogging. It's weird because the belt doesn't fit on it as well. But it is supposed to be better. Also the later years have a steel oil pump gear. It's expensive insurance.

I've got the water-pump, so that's a "for sure" on the WYAIT list, as is the tensioner rebuild, and new rollers; but this is the first I've heard about attacking the oil pump. It seems I'm awfully close to the Power Steering pump, too..... is that an issue? The alternator is coming up to the bench for a good cleaning, too.

Delta-P: you are suggesting tossing ALL 3 of the cam-belt gears?? My belt barely looks used, and the cog-wheels have crisp, sharp margins to the teeth. What are the indicators for replacement of the gears?

My car has the "~foot-long" belly pan and I suppose that it helps keep the road grunge at bay, but this is quite definitely a "pavement only" car. I'm considering adding the aftermarket pan that is available. I hope it doesn't oil-can....

Again...... what does that "blue powder" in the ignition coil tower mean???? Is the coil still servicable?

I was under the impression that only the 87 (S4) or newer got a belly pan.

The rest of us poor saps just have a thin aluminum sheeting between the oil pan and the raidator. It's pretty good for keeping junk out from getting between the engine and the radiator, but not much else as far as I'm consirned. It might push the debree from a tractor/trailer blow out down enought to clear the compresser and altanator, but I'm not betting on it.

The only part of my car that I'm willing to bet is able to take a hit is the two heavly made aluminum skids infrount of the frount bushing for the lower suspension. Other than that, there are the two rail-like extensions of the boday that go along the bottem to the rear wheels. They'll hanndle a botteming out.

Deffently a pavement only car.

You know, now that I look at it......... with the top fan shroud, the intake manifold, the thermostat housing, the fan and throttle quadrant , the AIR pump, the alternator, the power steering pump and reservoir, the timing-belt covers and auxilliary drive belts off, there's LOTS of room in there for a blower!!
