Angry Clutch is toast

Okay guys....give it to me straight...how much trouble are we in with this thing. We were out in the car yesterday afternoon when we started having trouble between 1st and 2nd....just didn't seem to be engaging...and by the time we got home we had nothing. The slave cylinder seems to be functioning fine and we don't have any hydraulic leaks anywhere. We're pretty sure it's the clutch itself . Now were at an impass...do we do it ourselves or bite the bullet and take it in. If anyone has had the pleasure of experiencing this I'd really appreciate any words of wisdom you could throw my way. We're both pretty capable as far as repairs to the vehicle go and I've done a couple of clutches (just not on a 928) but this car has shown us a thing or two in the short time we've had it and I'm a little leary of just diving right into the bowels of the beast

BTW...how long does it take for member to show up under your name once you've joined?

Anne - I replaced the twin disk clutch (along with intermediate plate, pressure plate, TO bearing and pilot bearing and ball stud bushing)on mine last spring (first clutch replacement I ever did). I have the workshop manuals which I highly recommend you get before you start. I can't compare it to other clutch replacements but I must say that it was very straight forward by the book. The beauty of the 928 clutch replacement lies in the removable short shaft design (this was a well thought out feature). Being able to disconnect the short shaft from the rear shaft lets the clutch assembly literally drop right out of the clutch housing without disassembling the clutch housing from the engine or the torque tube (944 owners are envious!). You'll want to pay special attention to the manual when reassembling so that the intermediate plate is adjusted properly but other than that it is not that bad a job. I spent approx $1200.00 on parts (basically replaced everything except flywheel and release arm). While you are in there you may as well replace the front shifter ball cup it will help tighten up that loose shifters feeling. Good Luck!

Anne - Sorry to post again but if you click on the "MY Greta" hypertext in my signature you will see a picture I took of the underside of 'Greta' with the clutch removed (flywheel is visible). Hope this helps.

Paul, thanks for the reassuring words . Turns out it IS the slave cylinder...SO decided to tear into the clutch tonight and didn't have to get that far to find the rubber boot in the cylinder has completely disintegrated. Can't say I wasn't relieved to hear that....$65.00 for a new cylinder and we're good to go! Happy camper here

It's not that hard a job if your pilot bearing isn'r grenanded. You could have just rebuilt the Slave for about $10.00.

Anne, hang in there. This too will pass.

I shared your trepidation at diving into one of these engines/clutches/suspensions/electrics... and got over it doing the jobs as they presented themselves. And they _will_ present themselves. The right attitude, fresh parts, the manuals, and you can fix anything on these beasts. And they will reward you. You're only seeing glimpses at this stage. Once it's sorted and freshened, and repairs are the exception, it will remind you why they were 70k once upon a time.

Well, we got the slave cylinder in...that was the easy part! I've never had so much fun (yes I'm being facetious) trying to bleed anything! I found some previous posts from Wally P with tips to bleed the air out of the master...yes there's air in the master and we'll try that tonight, but if anyone else has any nifty little tricks I'd love to hear those too

Mike, Thanks for the words of encouragement! So far, everything has been pretty doable as far as getting all the PO's uglies taken care of...and I have a feeling the car sat for some time before we were blessed with her. I figure it's good therapy, and the cost at the moment is right on line with a good shrink so I'm kind of getting a 2 for 1 deal...work out my aggressions and actually have something to show for it! When discouraged, head to the fridge for another beer...upon reentering the garage everything is seen in a new light! <img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" />
