'87 has only one pump.
I would vote NOT the crank position sensor. My experience with that failure was random, but binary - it either worked or it didn't - not heat related.
Of course, I eventually found out it was the crusty old harness itself that was the fail mode, so others may attest to the gradual heat-failure of the sensor.
Sounds more like the tank vent to me. I don't remember mine whooshing that much but my memory might be suspect, I haven't driven my car really since April.
