Cool

...Now why in the world would anyone dance around their living room in briefs, a button-down shirt, and wayfarers while listening to an old Bob Seger song?

I mean, it is so much easier just to do it naked like me!

The sad part--

Sooner or later, we will all fit the images in "The Money Pit". Mine was definitely cheap, considering the 'competition' at the time. Ownership has been less than cheap on a per-mile basis, but less costly on a per-year basis than a new Taurus or Accord would be, purchased at the same time. Fast-forward to today, and I'd be the proud owner of a low-mileage Honda. BFD.

I'd be better off with no car at all, but that's another analysis...

Bottom line is these cars are selling for way less than they are truly worth. However, the market has spoken and it is the ultimate judge of these things.

"The why" is a bit odd?

But the net result is this.

Here you have what was the TOP OF LINE PORSCHE. Above the 911 in price and stature. Some years it was faster. In '84 I think the 928 was the fastest street legal production car you could buy. Just ask someone at the home office in Germany.

Now you have 911s selling for a ridiculous premium on the used market. It now costs more that the 928 to buy...a lot more.

The 928 is undervalued. Which is a great secret for shark owners. They should be easily going for 5K to 10K more per copy. This is justifiable by the position they had with the motoring press when new and the place the hold now. THEY ARE MUCH MORE RARE THAN the made for 3 decades 911. Many auto journalists have give the 928 supercar status.

So, you by a SUPERCAR for 7-8K. Even in the most dire of cases it may suck 12K out of your pocket to make it a CHAMP. So, for 20K you have pristine example of a great supercar...or you could buy a used 911.

Economics make this moot point. Worst case, the cars cost the same (911 v 928). Best case...you got a hell of deal.

The "updated" 928's should be selling for more than they are. I'm referring to the cars which are owned and maintained well by some members on this list. So much work has been done to some of these cars which would save a new buyer a ton of cash and headaches, yet the typical scenario is "$7,000 invested in parts and repairs, $9,500 /obo.

It's one thing to buy a 928 with little service history and then have to do all the hard and expensive work to make it right, it's another thing to purchase a 928 which has had much of that work done (properly) by a caring owner, possibly a member of Rennlist. Unfortunately, the hard work and parts $ investment doesn't seem to be reflected in some of the selling prices.

Therefore, these are cars to buy, fix, drive, enjoy and keep. Cost of ownership goes with the territory. Resale value is reletave to purchase price. You can get in at a low $ figure, but will get out at a low $ figure too.

BTW, I also have the opinion that in most cases, the best way to own a 928 is to do the maintenance and repair yourself. If an owner has trouble figuring out which end of a wrench to hold, they will (1) pay big bucks to have their car maintained and (2) miss out on an important part of sports car ownership- the pride of maintaining, restoring and learning about the car they own.

Interior is really bad but hey where can you buy a car like this for this kind of money. I am having fun working on it and using it as a daily driver. If I were to buy a used car for a daily driver I would have spent 2k plus had to do some work anyway to get it to be reliable.

I figure I am way ahead of the game at this point and am planning on retoring this car to like new condition other than the paint... I like the Speed Yellow paint and it is going to get a Black and Yellow interior.

The author is probally one of those rear engine worshiping Porsche Purist with a three inch thingie who couldn't find anything better to do with his time. This is one of the many reasons why I don't attend many of my local PCA events. F@#* the Nord Stern PCA!

Actually, I think the author was right on until he got to the Tom Cruise/Risky Business part.

928 - "The Money Pit"
(anyone gonna argue with this?)

928 owners feel themselves the luckiest individuals in the world, as they have found these very expensive sports cars and picked them up for pennies on the dollar.
(How about this one?..still gonna argue?)

928 owners can be identified by sound in most Porsche repair shops
(These days, or at home...we are bringing them back to life, better than the generation before us who neglected them...I agree)

- they all tend to say something along the lines of "(insert large dollar amount here) to fix (insert relatively trivial part here)! You've got to be kidding me, I only paid (some number less than $10000 here) for the car."
(Unfortunately, we DO have to admit the shock of what parts still cost for these..we have all gotten over it quick though...just think if we paid upwards of $50K and had these problems)

All 928 owners secretly compare themselves to Tom Cruise in "Risky Business" and have at least once danced around their living room in a button-down shirt, briefs, and ray-ban sunglasses to "Old Time Rock and Roll".
(The author would have been taken seriously if he didn't throw this in here. Sounds like he is a new $$$$ model P car owner, that had a 20 year old 928 hand him his lunch on the freeway the day before. This write up is basically a resentment of the car and it's owners.)

This just makes me more proud and satisfied to be a 928 owner/LOVER!

Something Positive from the Off Topic Forum

THE WATERBOYS

These are water-cooled Porsche owners. Although this category obviously includes 928s, 924s, Boxsters, and the new 911s, I'm thinking particularly of 944s, and 968s. They are usually a friendly lot, even though they know that the purists are always thinking, "Real Porsches aren't water-cooled". WATERBOYS are well tolerated these days because the turbo versions of these cars are so fast and viceless on the track. If you are an air-cooled owner and you persist in tormenting a WATERBOY, he's likely to get fed up and challenge you to a lap or two at Heartland Park. Personally, I like WATERBOYS, because they really seem to enjoy their cars and they drive them "as they were intended". Besides, the new water-cooled Porsches are the best Porsches yet in terms of performance, and like it or not, they represent the future of the marque.

THE HARDCORE RACER (where I'm heading)

The HARDCORE RACER may have been The Wild-*** Gear Head at one time. But he evolved to the point that his Porsche is now of Non-Street Legal Status. Furthermore, the car has been gutted, chopped, reinforced, Semi-Tube Framed, Carbon Fibered, runs on 15" wide slicks, a huge Open Exhaust and sports a huge bi-Plane wing on the back. The HARDCORE RACER has sacrificed everything in search of that ultimate adrenalin rush that a Street Driven Porsche doesn't really satisfy anymore. He has even resorted to driving his Tow Vehicle as his daily driver. You can always tell the HARDCORE RACERS, they're the ones with Ford Duallies, Chevy Suburbans or similar trucks, sporting huge tow hitches and have Porsche decals on the back windows.

Author sounds like a 911 owner to me. At least they picked the right car for Spaulding (spell?) to throw up in, in Caddyshack! I'd rather dance around in my underwear than sit in a Go Kart full of puke!
But if I found a cheap 911 I'd probably buy it.
