I have always used 87 in my 86.5 and will continue to do so, just as I have in all my P cars, including my 911-E and my 2.7 914/6. Not a problem at all ever in any way whatsoever.

What ever happened to the survival of the fittest (or in this case, the smartest)?

I am just thrown back reading this whole tread. First at Sharktoberfest, I learn that we only need to change our oil once a year , and now I find out i've been pissing away money on the high grade fuel....... The owners manual on my '83 say's i should be using 91. Maybe I will try the mid grade for a while and see what happens. Kookie.

Nine2eight,

Different octanes require different refining even though the additives change by brand. Most stations have two tanks. One for the highest octane and one for the lowest. The in between grades are blended from these two tanks.

The price of Diesel has gone up because most of it is now imported as a refined product. Almost all of the diesel refineries have been closed due to their not meeting the new EPA standards.

The gas at the PEMEX stations (Mexico) have 93 octane and I have put it in my 91 S-4 numerous times with no issues noted. It is also 10 to 20 cents less expensive then the US prices. I personally use Chevron with techroline (sp).

There was a time when you would find PEMEX extra about every third town. Extra would be about 88 or 89 and all else would be in the 84-86 range. I once had to add 2 cycle oil to the tank to help reduce the knock impact. G

May be it's that 928 dually pick up (ya know, the one that can't even haul a case of beer).

Figures! I thought diesel was supposed to burn so much cleaner than gas. What's up with that!!

It was the processing (distilling) that needed cleaned up. The regs required a refinery to upgrade all at once (i.e. no phase in) or pay hefty fines, so most refineries took the third option and shut them down.

Speaking of dually pickups. Got behind one yesterday that set up a quarter mile smoke screen on highway 169. Don't think his upgrade chip was DOT approved.
