FLAPPY VALVE question
Ok, hear we go; my flappy doesn't work. Checked the solenoid, got power and vacuum. Attached vacuum pump to outgoing vac hose going to flappy, holds vacuum but doesn't turn valve. When I apply vacuum, I hear a clicking sound under the manifold. Checked flappy, turns freely with the aid of pliers. Please don't tell me I gotta pull the intake....Any help? <img src="confused.gif" border="0">
first thing is that you can pull the side covers off the manifold and see the flappy quite well. They are usually stuck shut from gunk and corrosion. the stuff may be enough that you can turn it by hand but not with the vacuum dashpot.
Open the covers and soak the butterfly with wd-40 or a similar penetrating lube. With a vacuum tester, tap into the flappy circuit from the flappy controller and pull a vacuum on the dashpot. If this doesn't open it you need to clean more and keep trying. With the flappy opened manually, you can get a toothbrush in to clean with. Maybe some carb cleaner might help too.
Remember that there are needle bearings above and below the butterfly flappy. They would prefer grease but you won't be able to get any in there so try getting some oil to wick into the shaft area at the top and bottom of the flappy for long term lubrication.
Should most likely do it.
