I haven't been bitten by the actual "racing" bug and hope that I don't, but I do take my 84 to the track every month. It has been to Laguna Seca, Buttonwillow (again Dec. 15), Spring Mountain, and Willow Springs. Hope to fit in California Speedway next year, as well. The engine has not been modified but when I added the supercharger I did replace the lower end (bearings) because of the added boost. Most of my modifications were suspension and brakes. Aside from the constant supercharger problems (which I think I have now solved) the car has always survived each track day. And I,too, often drive the car (still street legal) on the street. What I have, and continue to, learn from all of the track days is that the car is far more capable than I, and my track days are for me to build up my skills so I can more fully enjoy the capabilities of the car. Because of tire issues (getting stuck at the track when a piece of plexiglas punctured a rear tire and I couldn't find a replacement anywhere) I trailer the car to the track. I keep a log of track times to work on my improvements and I think the 928, although not made or designed for racing, is a very capable competitor - even at is bloated weight (compared to what I am on the track with). Personally, I think if a 928 owner has never taken their 928 to the track, they have, and are, missing a great experience and revelation as to the 928's capabilities. You don't have to "race" your 928 to go to the track, have a great time, learn about how great the 928 is, and learn just how much there is to learn about how to handle and get the most out of the 928. All 3 of my 928's have been to the track and I enjoyed it so much, I have dedicated the 84 to be the track-specific car - but still street legal and still taking it to work and to play.
