Post Valves are clicking

Hi guys, I was wondering what causes the valves on the driver's side bank. I've been told its build up, or they might need adjusting. Aren't the valves hydraulic though, making them self-adjusting? need some help...
Thanks
Cory

Ok. 82 Weissach. Took me a minute to figure out year and model.

Clicking is probably lifters. Some crud, dirt, tired oil, something is gumming a passage in a lifter or two. Probably worse when cold then disappears. Either drain a quart of oil _or_ wait til you're a quart low (which shouldn't be too long in a 928) and add a quart of Rislone. Run it for a few hundred miles, change oil. Your clickity-clack should subside/disappear.

I've posted this 3 times now
Onward thru the fog!
1. Perhaps a sticking hyraulic lifter.
2. Maybe an odd lifter or two is bleeding down.
Usually on high mileage, or abused sHARKs.
Should pump up when you reach engine operating temperature. Try a good warm up before attacking the road grids.
3. More than likely you are listenening to the injectors 'cycling' click click click...
Start car, open hood, stand facing engine.
Open your palm and pretend you are going to lay it on the spyder/intake. It get's hot, be careful.
As your hand approaches the intake the sound should diminish and 'move'. as you move your hand left or right, forward or back, the sound will get louder or softer.
There was a bunch of post's in the archives on this topic with quite a few responses. Some recommended additives to break up the gunk, and shellac on/in/around the lifters.
Should be something on the Greg Nichol's site as well: <a href="http://nichols.nu/tips." target="_blank">http://nichols.nu/tips.</a>
Mine was clicking, too. Turned out to be injectors -normal-. <img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[cherrsagai]" title="" src="graemlins/drink.gif" />

My experience it's lack of exercise. Run her a little on the open road, and it may go away.

btw... you should be able to pick it up at any AutoZone, PepBoys, Trak, etc. Hell, I'm running a quart in the 84 as we speak.

heinrich... good one. very true.

Remember Cosby?

"You gotta get the gunk out of it."
"How do I do that?"
"Well, you gotta go out and do 200 mph."
"Where do I do that?"
"Oh... any side street."

I'm curious to all these new noises, becuase it is my first 928 and is 22 years old with same motor and lots of miles and no major internal problems except driver's side camshaft, gear broke off underneath the Distributor.Ok, now that i'm back on subject,it sounds like valves, because when I start it up each morning, they are really loud guessing oil hasn't reached them yet. But the clicking is constant with engine speed, like when I rev it up. I changed the oil about a month ago with Castrol GTX 20W-50 and added new Mahle oil filter. Also, a few weeks ago I added some STP fuel injector cleaner. If the Rislone or other additives don't work, what would I have to do to fix it permanetly? ''CLICK CLICK CLICK" Very ANNOYING! lol
Thank you,
Cory

Cory. If you suspect some lifter buildup, try a lighter oil (like 5w-30), AND use 1qt of (yes Im gonna say it) MarvelMysteryOil, and run for 15-30min in the driveway. If there is some gum in the lifter passages (or elsewhere) you should hear it clear up.

Then change again.(I've actually done it 2x to make sure there is no additive remaining).

The MMO is really similar to a kerosene it seems, and does a nice job cleaning.

(Comment. Whatever you do, stay away from any additives with any "particles" in them. The oil filter is gonna catch most of it anyway, and Im sure Mr & Mrs Bearing wont like it much either).

.........at least this route you would be pretty sure the oil passages have had some form of cleaning to start with......good luck.

I had what sounded like valves clicking (drivers side). It turned out being a sheared keyway on the cam where it connects to the gear in front. This happenned because older 928's (mine was an 84) have less than superior bolts connecting the two.

I had to replace that cam. I had the bolt on the passenger side replaced as well. It cost $2500.00. It would have been more. However, I recently had the timing belt and waterpump replaced. Otherwise that would have been part of the repair.

The L-jet car's (US 80-84) injectors are LOUD! They are fired by the brain, which is fired by the igntion signel, so they go quicker or slower with the revs of the motor.

If I listen, I can hear the same sound on almost any fuel injected motor I play with, BUT it's no where near as loud. Also, when I put my hand up aginst the rail, the vibrations from the rail are intime with the sounds. On my car, if I stop and pay attention, I can hear them "under" the motor even with the hood closed. If I've got the window open, and anm running along a concrete wall, if I listen, I can hear all sorts of intersting stuff, among those is the injectors. I've run gallons of injector cleaner through it, to no effect.

Do rember, I'm 20, still have good hearing. (no loud motors, music, or such) I also have an idea what I'm listening for. I've heard a blistered tire some 500 miles before anyone else in my family could hear it or feel it, AND identifyed which one it was correctly.

If it's a REALY loud ratching noise at start up, you might think aobut checking the play on the T-belt tensioner arm. I used to have that only on wet cold start ups, before the t-belt replacement. Apperently the plastic bushings wore out, and the arm would jump back and fowarth before settleing down. VERY bad. One of the many things that used to be wrong with the t-belt on my car.

Mine were injectors. Confirmed by THREE separate sources.

Oh, you'll know a clacking lifter when you hear it. Very distinct single voice amoung the injector symphony. Much more tinny.

And V.U., I'm also pretty in tune with the sound of the beasts. You can hear a lot if you're listening. 'Course I'm still p.o'd about bad rear tires sounding like wheel bearings but that's another story.

I know this thread was from a while ago, but I'm having what is almost certainly a lifter clicking. The strange thing is....this happens intermittently. I have tried thinner viscosity oil with Rislone for 2-3 weeks then a penzoil engine cleaner at the local Jiffy Lube which was run through for 5 minutes or so, then added fresh 20-50W. At first things were quiet. Then about a week or so later. "click..............click..........click....................click" Comes and goes just like before. Very loud at times to the point where I think somethings going to break. I shut the car down for a while and usually it'll click a bit and go away. Oil press. looks fine at start up and while driving hard or mellow. Is this a sign of something worse or is there just likely some stubborn gunk in there somewhere?
