Post Help!!!! This is crazy!

Your not going to belive this. It makes no sence.

I went out to my car last week, and moved it and Uh oh! There was a large puddle of oil under it. OK, hummmm. I check the oil after driveing it a bit, full. OK.

I that weekend I moved it 3 times, each time, loughts of motor oil under it. The puddle is under front side of the engine. It'e motor oil's distinctive color, doesn't smell burnt, or anything.

OK, I check the dipstick after starting the engine, humm. pretty close to full.

Today I walk out to my car, again, a big sized puddle of oil. I check the dipstick I haven't drivein it in 3 days, hum, compleatly full!!!

The oil on the dipstick is NOT milky, not discolored, not burnt, it's not new, but it's fairly clean looking, and compleatly on the line full!!!!

Where is the extra motor oil comming from? My power brakes, power steering, trasmittion all work fine, and yet I'm loseing oil from something. I have yet to add any oil to the car. I've owned it for about 3 weeks now. The PO says it didn't have any leaks.

Just additional information,

It's alought of oil. Looks a bit like I pored about a 1/4 quart ont he ground a week, maybe more.

I don't see how that much oil could come fromt he car, and there be no change in the dipstick.

Cool

A small amount of oil can make a big mess-

-For a while, I had a leak from the oil filler strainer. This is the "can" shaped structure that you add your oil to on the two-valve cars. There is an aluminum tube that comes out of the bottom and goes forward, under the thermostat manifold to a hose that leads to the oil pan. It was a big job, but I pulled that off and changed out the gaskets. Problem solved. The symptoms? Drips of oil on the garage floor and an oily timing belt cover.

Then the steering racks started to leak....

No question about it beind alought of oil.

The puddle is about a foot and a half in dia, maybe 2 feet, and it's a fairly "thick" puddle.

What would suddently leak on the frount side of the engine?

Thanks

Just another question.

Does the 1983 US spec 928 have an "over flow tube" for the oil in the engine?

Thanks.

I had this very same problem and it was driving me crazy. It was only when the car would sit for a while. Turned out to be the power steering pump. The fact that you said it was thick leads me to believe that it may be PS fluid. Mine was just a loose hose. I took it off, cleaned it, and put on a new clamp and it hasn't leaked a drop since.

Just to clarify for the gentleman - our cars use automatic transmission fluid (Dexron ATF) for the power steering (PS) system.

I'm betting he'd be able to tell the difference between red ATF and brown motor oil.

practical joke theory sounds good, but if not, suppose PO used power steering fluid instead of ATF. system can fail in mode where the steering rack boots are filled with fluid, providing resivoir for mystery leak. Try squeezing or breaking seal to rack with wooden pick. There can be a *lot* of fluid in there...

Good Luck,
