Okay Guys--

This evening, for no other reason than the pure fun of driving, I took the 928 for a run in this very hot and humid night in western Connecticut.

Almost needles to say--it was a blast!

The pure joy of the night, reminded me of a night thirty odd years ago, taking out the first car that I purchased, as an eighteen year old driver, for the same kind of ride, with the same kind of results.

The question is: What was the first car you purchased for yourself (not given by parents...etc). We know we are into the 928 now---but where did it all start for each of us?

For me? A 1964 Triumph Spitfire for $400. Cool car and a chick magnet in those days!

I held on to the Mercury my dad game me until I was able to get myself the 82 Weissach. Came very close to getting a Datsun Z before learning more about 928s and becoming determined to get one.

DH,

You overpaid! My first car was a '72 Spitfire I paid $300 for, LOL. I bought it so that I could learn how to fix cars and it was perfect. Everything broke at one time or another. Plus the bonus of Lucas electrical system...

My first was a 1965 Austin Healey 3000 MkIII that I paid $350 for. Spent a cold winter of my 16th year "fixing it up." Oh, if I only knew then what I know now...

My first ever car was a bright yellow '76 Ford Fiesta that I inherited from my Mom when she became too sick to drive. It had 40 HP, 4-Speed manual transmission, and a top speed of about 85mph (on lucky days). It was all banged up when I got it, so I spend a lot of time fixing it up. I even borrowed a spray gun and a compressor, and repainted part of the car in a friend's garage!!! (the paint job looked very good, but the friend was not too happy finding yellow "paint dust" all over his garage afterwards...)

The first car I actually bought - from the money I got from selling the Fiesta, some money my Dad gave me for the high school diploma, plus some I had actually earned myself - was a beautiful, 2 year old '82 Renault Fuego GTS 5-Speed. It was dark green metallic, with tan courduroy interior, and looked like new. It had 96 HP - enough for me at the time. It got me into enough trouble...

The European Fuegos were much nicer looking than the US models. Mine was the first year that had good rust protection, and I had some more done on the underbody and inside the body panels (in the interior it smelled like a glue jar for the next month or two). I painted the bumpers and the areas below the doors in a charcoal grey metallic, added alloy rims, a leather wrapped 4-spoke steering wheel, a 928-like shifter (one piece boot and ****), and made a couple of other subtle improvements. (Note: I worked for a Renault dealership with body and paint shop at the time, and told people that by the time I'm 30 I will drive a 928)

A good friend of mine converted my cassette radio, so I could plug in my portable CD player - at a time when CD radios for cars were not available, yet. Two sets of three-way speaker systems (integrated almost invisibly - the only thing you could see were the front tweeters!) gave this car the best sounding stereo system I ever had. I was stil crazy then...

I kept the car for almost eight years, because I loved it so much! I eventually sold it because I got tired of the weak heater in the winter time.

Then I bought a used light blue metallic '86 RX-7S (comparable to the US GXL models with the Weissach style rear axle). No AC in the German models; the exhaust turned it into a Sauna. Nevertheless, it was so much fun that after two years, the rear tires were bald on the outside... A coworker and friend always referred to it as my "jet".

I moved to the US and bought an '89 Ford Probe LX from a Nissan dealer. Dealing with those salespeople was probably the biggest culture shock I could have gotten myself into, and since then I have avoided car dealerships like the plague. But the car was by far the most reliable I or any of my family members have ever had!

Then I was finally able to get the "real" thing: the 928 craze began...

I had turned 30, when my then boss offered his '78 Euro 928 for sale. I borrowed it for a weekend, but decided it was too much of a project. Well, I was 30 and drove a 928 (for the first time), so I had not lied 10 years earlier. The first 928 was purchased two years later: an '88 S4.

And so on...

Great Topic!!
1978 I was 18 with $500 to spend. Bought a 1969
Holden Brougham (Aussie version of GM vehicle)
Ran a 307 with 5 out of 8 cylinders running, and was 'prestige' driving, with power steering (WOW!!) and electic windows(BIGGER WOW!!)both items very rare in a standard Aussie production vehicle, even in 1978 . Also ran a 2 speed 'PowerGlide' auto box and 'embroidered'cloth seat material...oh yeah..also had the fake metal 'wood' trim.
The photo below is something like it

My first car (from my parents)was a brand new 1990 red 928 S4 5speed.

Only one problem though, I only got to drive it about 500 miles before my mom threatened to divorse my dad for being such an *** to give a sixteen year old such a car.

At this my dad traded it in and got him self a 500 SL mercedes and I got a Jeep Wrangler because my mom thought it was safe because it had a roll bar.

Six monthes later my mom borrowed my car because it was snowing, went around a curve and flipped it on its side. She gets out of the car and who picks her up? My uncle who lives down the street in a 928! No **** so go figure?

Four years later I worked summers in collage and with the money bought the wrecked 1984 Geneva show stand Strosek Twin Supercharged car for $8,000 that I still own today. See back to original or back to stock porsche post on rennlist

PS

I Got to ride the school bus till the end of that year dreaming of what once was, oh well

PSS

When I was ten my dad wanted to get my brother and I mini-bikes but my mom talked him into THREE WHEELERS BECAUSE THEY WERE MORE STABLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DO I EVEN NEED TO GO TELL WHAT HAPPENED THERE?
PUT IT THIS WAY IT IS NOW ILLEGAL TO EVEN SELL THEM

I didn't purchase my first ride until graduation from college (1990) prior to that my transportation back and forth from school, around town etc. was a 1980 Yamaha Maxim 650. First car was a 1977 Datsun 280Z, 4sp, Louisiana car (which meant no rust to a Mid-Western buyer like me) awesome first ride, drove it cross country (when I moved to California) drove it up and down the coast for the better part of a year until I traded it for a 1971 BMW 2002 and an Alpine stereo! 2 Bimmers, another Z, 2 Land Cruisers later and I finally landed my shark - 1982 Weissach, 5spd. I feel I have finally arrived!

TGIF - make it a great day! <img src="graemlins/drink.gif" border="0" alt="[cherrsagai]" />

First self-purchased car? 73 Datsun 240Z.

Promptly yanked the 6, stuffed in a small chevy (327) and a BorgWarner Super T10 4spd. What a beast. Eventually had a total of four V-8 240's.

And then I got a 944 followed shortly by a 928. Last model I think I'll ever own.
