Project number 2
The next adventure into the depths of the 928 is to be the sound system. This '86+ car had the optional "amplified" version of the Blaupunct system, and there are jumbers and loose connectors all over the place, courtesy of the PO. I would like to dissect the whole of that wiring harness from the car and wondered if anyone else had done that dissection. Is the stereo-system's harness separate from the general chassis harness, or is it integrated into it? I hate leaving "nipped-off" ends hanging out of a factory wiring loom, as the PO did. There are also a number of those aweful crimp connectors under the dash, and the Cruise control is not operational....... I can guess why!
Thanks for the assistance.

BTDT. I upgraded to a Blau, kept the stock amp. I've since then replaced the 6.5" and far rear speakers.
For radio and speaker upgrades on all my cars I only work with Stefan @ <a href="http://www.swstereo.com." target="_blank">www.swstereo.com.</a> His knowledge about Porsche and Mercedes is the best, bar none.

Why not install performance products in your performance car? The 928 is a great platform for audiofile grade equipment like Nakamichi, ADS, Milbert, etc.
Every experience with Blau I've had has been Blah.
No Alpine, Pioneer or Kenwood either, I'm probably stepping on toes here, but that suffs for Hondas.

Some of us prefer the stock look in our cars, some like the new wild spaceship look, and others just like to keep German products in their German cars. I will replace all my old equipment with Blauplunkt products because of my own tastes.

That's why I said no Alpine, Pioneer, Kenwood etc. All show, no go. The high end stuff looks classy, and sounds great. I typically don't stare at my deck but rather listen to it, so obviously the sound quality is number one for me. If I wanted something that just looked good I'd take the stereo out and put a picture of me in it's place.
I have a Blahpunkt in my benz (which sounds terrible) this Nak deck looks every bit as good and also sounds great:
<a href="http://www.nakamichi.com/auto/cdplayers/cd_700specs.htm" target="_blank">http://www.nakamichi.com/auto/cdplayers/cd_700specs.htm</a>
Anyways, the Germans build great cars, but their audio leaves something to be desired.

Have you considered Becker? They are German also.
I agree on the Alpine, the one thats in my car is for crap! I disagree on the Pioneer. I have one in my truck and I like the sound quality very much. It not the ricey plasma screen one, but a normal static display model. Howver the numerals are green and I would prefer an amber display for the 928.

Stock wiring is poor at best.
Quality shilded interconnect wire in necessary to the amplifier.
Quality speaker cable like Audioquest <a href="http://www.audioquest.com/home.html" target="_blank">http://www.audioquest.com/home.html</a> is necessary from the amp to the speakers.
The only thing that may be acceptable is the power to the deck. Sometimes that isn't even good.
You could have a stereo in your 928 that would blow your mind and would sound better than 95% of Americans home systems with some careful reasearch.
My philosophy is if you're going to do it, do it right. How much time are you going to spend in your car? I spend a lot. A quality system will allow you to get into quality music like jazz and classical which requires a ultra high quality system to be appreciated. If you live where there is traffic and congestion, you will be amazed how it won't bother you in your portable sound studio.

Well, you really need a FSM to know what wires are what. The wiring is a part of the harness. In a stock setup the preamp outputs go through the fader switch by the driver back into the dash and out to the amplifier. If you have dangling wires then maybe the PO has already bypassed the fader.
But, be happy that the PO didn't just cut off the leads to the amp as mine did. Had a heck of a time restoring the stock amp wiring when I upgraded to the Blau.
Good luck.

I just replaced the Becker head unit in my '92 300E with a Blau Honolulu. Wired it through the stock amps and the sounds blows me away. Sound is 100 times better than the Becker. Before the Blau I thought I was going to replace all the speakers. Not now. 40 watts through the amp and you get a powerful sound.
