Post Rebuilt Fuel Distributor?

Hey gang,

After replacing my balky original fuel distributor with a good used one I bought awhile back, the replacement too has gone Tango Uniform!

Anyone have a source for a rebuilt Bosch CIS (K-Jetronic system) fuel distributor for my '79?

The Bosch part number stamped on the distributor is: 0438100027.

I'm looking for a reasonably priced rebuilt one (I've already found some expensive sources) or maybe a good used one.

Any assistance is appreciated. Thanks.

Sorry to here your CIS distributor has once again given you grief.

I remember talking about this subject some time ago, what did you end up doing? Did you simply replace yours with a good used one or did you do the rebuild kit that was discussed?

Yes Max, the fuel distributor is proving to be the Achilles' heel of the CIS system.

Previously, I bought a used one that worked great for a couple months - now it doesn't.

The CIS fuel distributor is not an easy animal to rebuild. I've spoken to many fuel injection experts and they all agree that buying a remanufactured Bosch unit is the only way to go.

Bummer, I guess I was just lucky when I did mine. I just bought the kit, through it in, hooked up the fuel gauges, set the pressures, the plate gap then went on my marry way.

Good luck, lets us know how it turns out.

Randy you may be able to source the part here in Australia, if you tell me what price needs to be to be interesting I'll see what I can do. Give me a part no. Is the number you quoted is Bosch number or a Porsche number? I also may be able to get a second hand one cheap also. To my way of thinking if your keeping the car get a remanufactured distributor.

Max, your '89 is not a CIS system - the fuel distribution method is completely different on that model. Perhaps you are confused?

Thanks for the offer Greg. The part number is listed in my original post.

I should have looked more closely (at the part no.Derr Greg open your eyes)I'll get you two prices today, one for a new one and for a rebuilt. I will see if Porsche has any surplus stock, the're often real cheap, but for that I may need a Porsche part no. because I don't know, was there a difference in your model to the european model which is what we use?

Hi Randy, here is your prices.

Bosch remanufactured $1800.00 AUD plus shipping

Rebuilt locally $800 AUD plus shipping

What he did say was that if your replacement albeit second hand only lasted a few months you may have trouble with dirt or rust in the lines. He said if you got a locally rebuilt one they would strip to determine if this was the problem.

If this was your problem you will need to clean your entire fuel system which will include removing the tank. You can click on the link to get an exchange rate quote. It's roughly 53c to a Australian dollar.

web page

I did ask him about the reliability of the locally rebuilt product and he said and I quote.

"We used to have some issues with these, (comebacks) Then we changed suppliers and he has done 12 for us and all have been O.K

Let me know, all the best.

Randy,

You may want to see why they are failing. You may have some sort of contamination in you system causing the problems. CIS fuel injection may not be the best for performance but I would venture to say it is the most reliable ever made.

Mercedes used CIS injection into the 90's on their cars and would probably use it today if it were not for stricter emission laws.

I had your CIS on my car for many years and it gave me flawless performance; however, any sort of contamination can ruin the fuel distributor.

Good luck and sorry the part failed.

Humm, Yea, I guess you’re right on that one Randy, however this isn’t the first car I’ve owned and worked on. It's kind of hard to confuse a Batch or Sequential Pulse Injection System for an old Constant Injection System like whats on your car.

I was told it couldn't be done right by all of the Big Fuel injection shops in Houston (seem there no money in selling the kits), they would rather sell you a "rebuilt" distributer for a bunch more money. I was luck, I found a guy who raced VW Rabbits that showed me it could be done 50% of the time. I may have over simplified the rebuild process a little, but I would think you should be able to find someone in your area that’s not afraid to give it a go. Even if you had to pay full list (50-100 usd) for the kit and failed to fix it, at least you could be secure in you man hood that you tried.

Don’t you hate it when that happens!

Randy,

Have you tried 928 Int? They list the rebuilts for $650 exchange. They also list used ones for $350 but I would stay away from them unless you know it was recently taken from a good running 928. If left dry for extended periods, the orings in the distributor will dry and crack.

Greg - thanks very much for your assistance, it is greatly appreciated. Your price for a rebuilt unit is pretty good, but the logistics and time involved for acquiring one from your associates is a bit of a hurdle.

I did track a lone unit down at Fuel Injection Warehouse in Los Angeles. After ordering it, with overnight shipping, they called me back an hour later to tell me that they tested that distributor prior to shipping, as they always do, and it failed! It was the only one they had.

Jim - The fuel system appears to be completely free of contamination (at least now anyway). We blew out the lines between the fuel pump up to the fuel distributor - no indication of particles on the white rag that caught the fuel. Just one of those things that happens to old parts - no worries. I'm installing a new fuel filter prior to the new fuel distributor just to be on the safe side (even though the existing filter is only 7 months old).

Dennis - Yes, after trying to save a couple bucks at the LA place, I turned to 928 International. Jim had one rebuilt unit sitting on the shelf. He sent it out overnight express and it landed on my doorstep at 9:00 this morning. 928 International came through in the clutch!

I guess the positive aspect to come out of all this is we replaced the coil and did some additional work to correct a rich fuel condition. I'm anticipating that she'll be running even better than before this incident - all part of the cost justification process !
